possibly dumb question inside....

what do you use to keep paint brushes from hardening after staining something?

i'm staining an old piece of furniture, and I keep going out and buying new paint brushes between coats, because they get rock hard.

I'm using the minwax polyshades, with the polyurethane included in the stain....

any ideas?

Re: possibly dumb question inside....

  • maybe paint thinner or mineral spirits???  I am not really sure, but the people in the paint section of home depot/lowes should be able to tell you.  You could also try the website of the manufacturer.  Sometimes they have informaiton like that.
  • I always use the disposable foam brushes for that very reason.  They are super cheap and I just throw them away between coats.
  • DH's dad is a pro painter, so I emailed him your question and this is what he said:

Dad kept the oil brushes in a can of gas to keep them soft. They can stay for weeks in the gas. Latex brushes can be kept in water. They will want to make sure they shake them out very well before starting again.

  • We always wrap them in plastic & stick them in the fridge!
