Valentines Day...what do you do?

Hey Ladies! I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for Valentines Day. DH and I have never really done anything big or special for Valentines Day, but we do a nice dinner. We have been to Mitchell's, Ruth's Chris, I have been to Hyde Park, but it has been about 7-8 years, Fish Market, I have been to Ocean Club but DH hasn't, and last year we did La Scala, which is where we had our wedding reception. I was going to make reservations at someplace like Mitchells, but I also kind of want to try something new. If there are enough votes for one of the old favorites, I will probably do that, but any suggestions for something new is very much welcomed. Or any suggestions for something a little out of the box? Dinner at home? What do you do?? Thanks for the help ladies!!

Re: Valentines Day...what do you do?

  • To be honest with you, we did a romantic dinner out for Valentine's day one year... never again. It was busy and the restaurant was not even keeping their reservation times.

What about setting up a romantic candlelight dinner at home? Turn off your cell phones and lock your doors for the night. Make something special for dinner (his favorite... maybe something that takes extra work) and a nice dessert. Some fresh flowers, a romantic movie, and perhaps give him a massage (lotion/oil)?

Save the romantic night out for a week or two after Valentine's. I think you will be glad you did.
  • My nice restaurant suggestion would be Barcelona in German Village. I've never had a bad meal or experience there.

Personally, DH and I are not into fancy dinner for Valentine's Day. Since we started dating, we have "celebrated" Valentine's Day with dinner and drinks at the Blue Danube north of campus. But that's our style since we think VDay is kinda lame.
  • We have done several different things for Valentine's Day.  This year unfortunately I will be forced to stay at work until 8 for Parent-Teacher conferences. Yuck!

This year we are planning to go to Marcella's for dinner.  The past few years we have went to different restaurants.  We had the most fun when the restaurant wasn't busy and we could sit and enjoy ourselves.  I think my favorite Valentine's Day was when we went to the restaurant on 33 between Bethel and Sawmill. But that one is no longer open.

  • we also one time did the "wine and dine" and went to ruth chris for vday a few years ago ... the food was good and all but it just felt like we were trying to hard or something.. can't explain but ever since then I told the Husband (at that time boyfriend) he was off the hook for Valentines Day forever :p

We'll likley relax at home, make dinner, and watch college basketball :p Usually we do end up getting each other cards or something small like flowers or chocolate, but no major craziness for us.

  • My all-time favorite special restaurant is Basi, in German Village. I love that it's so tiny and tucked away. And the food is always great. But because it's so tiny it may already be booked for V-Day.
  • Just to throw out an idea:

My DH and I get pizza (from Plank's since were former german villagers) and eat brownies on Valentine's day.  It doesn't sound like anything fancy or special but the fact that we do it ever year has made it that way.

I appreciate it a lot because we still get to celebrate, its something to look forward to and we can do it no matter what our schedules are like.

If you are looking for a great restaurant, I would try the restaurant at the Corazon!  Its open to the public.  My other recommendation would be Lindey's (my absolute favorite).

  • I think I gave the wrong idea in my post when I mentioned all of the restaurants. DH and I have been out to a "nice" restaurant a total of 1 time (last year...our first VDay as Husband and Wife) for Valentines Day in the 4 previous Valentines Days that we have had together. I just didn't want ya'll to think that the nice dinner this is something we do every year or even HAVE to do. Those are just restaurants that we have been to before. We usually keep it pretty low key...for example, our second Valentines Day we spent touring model houses and went to Arbys. We aren't into the houpla (sp?) of Valentines Day. We don't HAVE to go to a nice restaurant, it was just something I had in mind. The more I read your posts, I am thinking low key is the way to go. Just staying home and relaxing, and maybe making a fancy dinner. Thanks for the suggestions ladies!
