Chocolate squares equals chicolate chips?

I have a recipe that calls for 4 squares of Bakers chocolate. I only have chocolate chips in the house. Does anyone know the equivilant in chocolate chips?

Re: Chocolate squares equals chicolate chips?

  • *please excuse my obvious typos*
  • You're not going to get exactly the same results because chocolate chips have sugar in them where baking chocolate does not.  However, it will be close.

A square of baking chocolate is one ounce, so four squares is 4 ounces.  1 cup is 8 ounces, so a half cup is 4 ounces.  You might want to measure on the high side since the space between the chips will take up volume in your measuring cup.  Basically mound the chips in a half cup measure and you should be close.

Or go to the store for baking chocolate.  :)
  • Chocolate chips have sugar and other ingredients in them. Bakers squares are usually just pure unsweetened chocolate. You could probably substitute but need to adjust sugar in your recipe.

6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped, can be substituted for 1 cup (6 ounces) semi-sweet chocolate chips. When substituting for chocolate chips, make sure to use the same type of chocolate (i.e. semi-sweet, milk).

3 tablespoons chocolate chips OR 1 square (1-ounce) unsweetened chocolate plus 1 tablespoon sugar can be substituted for 1 square (1-ounce) semi-sweet chocolate. 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder plus 7 tablespoons sugar plus 1/4 cup fat can be substituted for 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate. Bittersweet chocolate can be substituted for semisweet chocolate. There could be a slight difference in texture and flavor.

  • wow! That was fast. You ladies know your chocolate!
