we won a trip to Vegas-- hidden catch?

So Ryan and I always fill out the raffle tickets for those new cars in the mall, just for kicks. :p Well anyways we didn't win the Landrover but we were just called by Sunshine Travel Agency saying we had won the 2nd place award which is a trip to Las Vegas (yay!). From the pitch on the phone, apparently we just have to go listen to them give us a sales pitch for an hour, and if we're there for a whole 60 minutes, we automatically get a trip to Vegas. Hell, why not? :P So we thought we'd go listen, but we're wondering if anyone on here has heard of Sunshine Travel Agency, or know what the story is on this type of trip? (Like, maybe they buy our plane tix but after that we're on our own? We might even be interested in something like that.) IDK, anyone know if they have a good reputation?

Re: we won a trip to Vegas-- hidden catch?

  • They're going to try to sell you a timeshare or something else like it. I don't think I'd go.
  • I sat in on that about 5 years ago.  They basically sell you different levels of timeshare packs.  You can redeem them to go to one of hundreds of timeshares they have.  I actually thought it was a great concept and not too pricey, but I was single at the time, and it would have basically been me treating my friends to vacations.  I ran into an old family friend when I left and she and her husband had bought one of the low-level packages.

I was given a $25 gc to Applebees, which I think I used.  Then a voucher for a hotel, but it looked like a pain in the butt to redeem it, so I never did.

Bottom line:  if you think you have a couple hours to spare some night, you could go and hopefully actually be able to redeem the prize.  But keep in mind that those prizes are not always easily redeemable.
  • We were offered this several times during the wedding. I can't remember the company, but if you went to a cook wear seminar, they would give you a free trip to the Bahamas. It just sounded to good to be true and we passed. I would call the BBB and Attorney General office and check everthing out 1st.
  • I am familiar with them(a friend went to sales pitch).  You will not find a ton on the internet about them because they use different names in every state.  But like pp said--they try to sell vacation packages.   They may give you a gift certificate for a hotel room where you pay up front and get reimbursed--however people have had problems getting reimbursed.  I prob wouldnt do anything where you have to pay for up front.

  • I "won" a trip a few years ago from them for signing up to win a car at a mall in Cincy. I don't really know much about them other than what others on here have already said. In the end I chickened out and didn't go to the meeting and avoided their calls.

  • That doesn't really sound like you won anything if you have to go listen to them talk.  It may sound easy, but I have heard that they really do some hard sales on you while you are there.  Plus, like other poster's said, you'll need to find out about the fine print of the "trip."

If you have time to waste, then go ahead and check it out.  But if it were me, I'd skip it.  I'm willing to bet there are alot of hidden catches.

  • thanks ladies! i dunno if we'll go, we might just because. i'll let you know what we learn if we do go.
  • This is an issue that you didn't ask about but if you are given a trip to Vegas you will need to pay taxes - both to the state and federal governments.  This necessitates doing estimated tax returns (i.e., filing each quarter (4x year)).  If you decide to take the trip, talk to an accountant first!  You'll have to come up with cash to pay the taxes (because you can't withhold it from your check).
  • yes it's a time share ,yes they will do the hard sell and yes they give you a cert that can be VERY hard to redeem...ie: they will tell you the 1st date not avail, the 2nd, the 3rd etc...BUT they could upgrade you to a better hotel for say $25 a nt etc.

In all the years...I've known many folks who 'won' yet no one who ever got to use it!

Yes....you have to pay taxes on it and usually they say the 'value' is much more then you'd paid if you'd did it yourself!

    It's 'winner beware'!
