Cancun??

I posted this on the travel board, but didn't get many responses!  Has anyone been to Cancun before?  We're going this month, and are interesting to see if there are any excursions/restaurants/shopping we shouldn't miss or if there are any to stay away from!  TIA!

Re: Cancun??

  • I went for Spring Break back in 2000, so I'm sure your trip will be much different.  However, we did go on an excursion to a place that was pronounced something like "extera" but was spelled with a "qu" or something.  Oy, I know this is not much help.  It was a really nice place and you could hike and snorkle and there were ruins.  I'll try to look it up, but maybe someone else will suggest it in the meantime.
  • I love love love Cancun!

Try Lorenzillo's for dinner, and make sure to get a seat overlooking the water. Senor Frogs is also lots of fun. :)

Xcaret (ecological park with snorkeling and lazy rivers, etc)  is very nice if you want to rent a car and drive or I bet you can take a tour there.
    Have fun!!

  • I think the place she is talking about is Xcaret.  They also have one called Xel-ha.  They have natural lagoons with snorkeling etc.  I think the first one has swimming with the dolphins and such.  They both have admission fees, but you can probably search both of them on-line and see which one sounds interesting.

Chichen-itza has the largest ruins  there, but its a whole day trip thing. I thnk it's over 2 hours by road (we took a plane from Cancun when we were there). It really is stunning, but depends if you are into that sort of thing for the long trip.  You can look that up too.

    Have fun, I'm jealous! :(

  • Never been, but can I come?  I'm sure J won't mind. lol  BTW, thanks for the cute card!! :)
  • I haven't been in a few years but I can highly recommend Xel-Ha.  There are so many interesting fish and other marine life in the park it's amazing.  If you're not into that Cozumel is a bit south of Cancun and is supposed to have really great conditions for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Isla Mujeres is a ferry ride away and is perfect if you're looking for a relaxing day away from the crazyness in Cancun.  The town is full of little shops and restaurants.

The only ruins I've been to are the ones at Tulum.  They're very interesting and right off a beautiful beach.

Mexico is by far my favorite place in the Caribbean.  Hope you have fun!

  • LOL!  I was totally talking about Xcaret.  I knew you girls would be able to help me out.  Sorry!  I blame all my absetmindedness on my pregnancy.  Although, I probably wouldn't have been able to remember that name 9 months ago either. :o)
  • definately go to chichen itza for a side trip and we also did a boat cruz to isla mueres for the day of shopping and exploring. you will love it. cancun has the most beautiful blue water i have ever seen. just be prepared for people asking for tips every where. it drove us crazy! if you like bars be sure to check out senor frogs it was a blast
