I got a doggy!

DH and I got a new dog tonight. He is my first dog ever, and DH's first dog since his beloved Jake passed away almost 4 years ago. He is a boxer named Yukon and he is (what the Humane Society predicts to be) 7 years old. He is the sweetest thing, and we just could not leave him in the HS any longer. We know he may not be around for as long as if we had a puppy, but we wanted to give him a good home and some TLC. So I am pretty excited and a little nervous because I am allergic to dogs, but there is no real rhyme or reason to what dogs and what triggers the allergies. So far *knock on wood* he has been here for 4 hours and we're doing great, so I hope that we can keep him! Just wanted to share my excitement :-)

Re: I got a doggy!

  • YAY rescue dog, and kudos to you two to getting a dog instead of insisting on a puppy!  Do you have pictures?

If you haven't already, check out the Pets board.  The women over there are super helpful and have loads of info that I've found so useful (this is my first dog since childhood).

Both DH and I are allergic to dogs as well, but we've found that lots of vaccuuming and consistent grooming mean we've had no problems so far.

I can't wait to hear more stories!

  • Yay, that is so exciting! Being a doggy mommy is a lot of fun...plus the unconditional love from a dog melts my heart. I may be having the worst day, but cuddling with our dog Sophie makes it all better. Plus she is a really good listener :)
  • Awesome! Congrats on your new family member, they are truly a joy!!!
  • We rescued our pup from the humane society. It is such a wonderful organization! Rescue pups are the best! :)
  • Kudos to you for adopting an older dog!!  He will be forever happy and grateful to you for giving him a good home.  I hope your allergies don't interfere!!  Enjoy your new family member, our HS dog is the best thing that ever happened to us.
  • Yay!!  Congratulations!!!
  • Welcome Yukon! And I agree...kudos to you for adopting an older dog. They need love too!
  • Good for you! That's awesome! :)
  • Congrats! That's awesome. Our dogs were roughly 6 and 7 when we got them, and they've been great. I wish I could have known them as puppies, but I don't miss housebreaking at all!
  • Day 2 and my allergies are fairing well. But like some of you mentioned, I feel like I am constantly sweeping and I'm telling DH "wash the dog, brush the dog, etc." Yukon is going to need a couple more baths to get all of the yuck of the HS out of him, but he's been a dear so far. I think being my first dog, getting an older one who is tame and house broken and listens is the best thing. We love him dearly and thank you all for welcoming him! I will continue to share stories, and I do have pictures, but I not sure how to get them loaded onto here...
