Hip dysplasia update...

So, bad news about my niece Courtney.  I guess her hip has never been in place.  So, this means bad news for the little one.
Surgery (end of February - beginning of March)
Then FULL BODY CAST for 6 months.
Then braces for 12 weeks.
I haven't talked to my sister but I can only imagine how devastated she is...I'll keep you posted.

Boo!!

Re: Hip dysplasia update...

  • Try not to worry too much.  *hugs* I went through the same regiment, they said I'd probably never walk and I ended up being a very successful track athlete and have minimal problems.  I know Amber and Danica have similar histories.
  • Yep, me too!  I think I had the full body cast for a year though, then braces for six months.  I was two when I had the surgery and have also made a much better recovery than what they expected!  I ran track, was a cheerleader & played softball, and have never had any issues.  Last 2/28, I had to have a total hip replacement (the doctors always said that arthritis would set in at an early age) because my hip joint was virtually completely disintegrated.  I was fine until the age of 28 or so, then I could really feel the effects of the arthritis coming on, and began noticing some restrictions in activities, and eventually in day to day things.  I had the hip replacement at age 31, and am now doing great once again!  I'm sure Courtney will have the same fabulous results & be back to be a toddler in no time!  Feel free to have your sister e-mail me if she wants more specifics or just reassurance!  I'll be thinking of them in the coming months!
  • I don't have my own success story, but I'll keep my fingers crossed that things work out as wonderfully for your niece as they did for our local nesties!

  • That's exactly what happened to me. My parents found out when I was about two months old. I was in a body cast for a year and then braces for a few months. I had special shoes that I had to wear to learn how to walk. I ran and did track in school and did normal kid things. The only thing I can't do well is sit indian style and I can't do the splits. I'm having problems now, but I'm 34. It's time for my hip to be replaced and I might consider it this year.

I'll keep your niece in my thoughts and prayers. She's gonna be just fine though.

    HUGS
