Legal aid in Columbus?

Does anyone know of a legal aid society in Columbus?  (Even something through OSU?  I just have no idea where to look).

We're having issues with our condo association.  They were negligent in cleaning gutters and maintaining land grade, and it meant massive water damage and a replaced basement wall, to the tune of $2000.  They're telling us that "outside problems that become inside problems are inside problems" and I'd like to get some advice about whether we can take them to small claims court and win.  It's only really worth it to us if we don't have to pay huge lawyer fees, though, obviously.  Any suggestions?

Re: Legal aid in Columbus?

  • If you're going to Small Claims, it's not worth hiring an attorney.  There is a Legal Aid Society, but their income requirements are pretty low, so they may not be able to help you.

Try calling a few attorneys (go to martindale.com to search by practice area) and set up an initial consultation with one to see what your options are, or if you have a case.  The initial consults are usually free.  Just be sure to ask before setting the appointment.

    Good luck!

  • Columbus has a legal aid society - there website is:
    http://www.columbuslegalaid.org/

Also, Capital University has a legal clinic you may want to look into. Students do the work (but are supervised by licensed attys). This is a great opportunity for the students to learn and for the client as well since they get the service free of charge. I worked there while I was in law school and couldn't be a bigger advocate of the program. CULS website is:

    Good luck!
  • Also meant to throw in my email address in case you have any questions or would like an initial opinion - michelle at yourohiolawyer dot com.

  • The College of Law also has a clinic...I don't know what type of cases they take anymore, but it's worth a shot.
