***Moms/ Moms to be***

I want to give a friend a nice children's book for her baby (due end of January, but he may make his debut sooner!) The shower was today and I could not be there. I was hoping some of you could suggest some special/ meaningful books that are some of your favorites. I'm lost here, and I know you ladies will point me in the right direction! Amanda

Re: ***Moms/ Moms to be***

  • Ok. I am not a mother, but I did work in a childrens library for three years and I am a lover of children books, The book I buy for every baby shower I go to is Each Peach Pear Plum. Its absolutely adorable, and I have fond memories of it from when I was little.
  • You have to get "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch. It is my all time favorite book for kids (and mommies). My sister and I used to read this book all the time and bought it for my mom within the last 5 years.
  • I love the book Guess How Much I Love You....SO cute.  :)
  • good post - i'm going to be writing these down....
  • I love the book Corduroy by Don Freeman - it's about a teddy bear who lives in the toy section of a department store and wishes to be taken home by a little boy or girl but he has a missing button so he looks ragged and no one wants to buy him. It does have a happy ending and has a "don't judge a book by its cover" type lesson to be learned. Love it!
  • I like the books by Sandra Boynton...they are generally silly books, but cute...

The Belly Button Book, Doggies, Moo, Baa, La La La.

Also I always loved the Pokey Little Puppy. :)
  • Librarian/former teacher here, a good gift would be board books or a cloth book, so the child can enjoy the book now without tearing it up. I totally second Sandra Boynton, or another good one would be Jez Alborough.
If you're going to go with classic picture books, I like Corduroy (Don Freeman), Goodnight Moon (Margaret Wise Brown), Where the Wild Things Are (Maurice Sendak), and Swimmy (Leo Lionni).
  • As a kid I loved "Harry the Dirty Dog", "The Little Engine that Could" and "The Snowy Day." as well as any of the original Winnie-the-Pooh books.

A new favorite is "Little Pea" about a pea who doesn't like to eat candy for dinner, but has to in order to get to eat dessert, which is spinach pie. (It is so freakin' cute!)

Here's a link, but they also have it at B&N.

  • Here are a couple that my little girl likes:

Goodnight Moon (has lots of bright, colorful pictures and has hard pages)

On the Night You Were Born (it's a beautiful book!)

Also, we have a book with numerous nursery rhymes in it. It's great for me/mom b/c I can't remember a lot of the words. :)

  • Some of my favorites are any of the Shel Silverstein, the classic Curious George, Richard Scarry's Busytown, Dr. Seuss, etc. Some of these books are special ones that only mommy holds, but DS loves reading them. There were only a few months that we couldn't read the real books. He still loves all of this board books too. Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton remains a favorite. The OK Book is really cute and Goodnight Gorilla is a current fave. But, if you're going for a really nice one that will last, some of the hardback classics will be appreciated for a long time.
