Poll: Crazy Shopping Stories??

I'm sure there are some crazy stories now that Christmas is so close- let's share :-)

Here's mine:
I'm looking for an Amish-made wooden trash bin for MIL (hers is broken). The kind with a lift up lid, not a tip out front. Has to be that kind. (Amish made just bc they appear to be the only ones who make them, and they are just such darn good quality)!

I call around to some furniture stores, they only carry the tip out kind. So I do a google map search for Amish furniture stores in my area. I find one called Holliday's Country Oak, says its along 33 near Lancaster, and they have what I'm looking for! Yay! So I mapquest the address. Turns out NOT along 33, but on the other side of Lancaster, but ok I don't have any other leads. The woman I spoke to on the phone said they'd be open until 4.

I leave around 230, and drive and drive and finally get to the address. There's a giant sign along the road that says "Hollidays Country Oak".... but NO STORE. Seriously. Just an empty building that REALLY doesnt look like it was ever a country furniture store. I call 411 and get the number and call, and now its a voice recording saying is "Holliday Country Oak and Mini Storage" and no body answers after a few calls. By this time it's almost 3:30. I'm driving around Lancaster lost.

Then I get the smart idea to look in my call history and compare the numbers I called, and the number I got from 411 is NOT the number I called when I was at home. So I redial that number... and get the lady again!!!! It turns out that I was at their heated storage facility??? That is somehow in Google under the store name. There USED to be a store there, so Google updated the phone number to the NEW store, but the address is still to their storage place. Lady is super duper nice, apologizes 74 ways from Sunday, gives me wonderful detailed directions--- to Hocking Hills. So, since I was already in the car, and she offered to stay open for me, I drive to Hocking Hills.

Get to the store. Love it, the owners are so nice. Beautiful. Only to be disappointed- they have exactly what I want, only in the dark oak stain, and I need a light oak stain. Ugh. Alright well, ok. THEN I hear the owner say:
"Well, you're not going to like this, but I do have it in the light stain....
back in our storage facility."

Yes, yes, I actually drove BACK to the facility with the guy to pick up this trash can. Its very nice! And that was my shopping adventure this year.

Re: Poll: Crazy Shopping Stories??

  • Wow!  You are a very good dauther-in-law!

My crazy shopping story, isn't really that crazy.  But I learned something new: Borders.com and Borders the store don't have the same prices.  In fact, Borders online is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper.  I had a Borders 25% off coupon and was going to use it for the Planet Earth DVDs.  It turns out they are 100 dollars in the store, and 60 online!  And they don't price match.

So, I got it for 57 at Walmart.  WHO would be so stupid to buy them from Borders??

  • Holy smokes Jan, that is crazy! At least the owners were understanding : ) I don't really have any crazy shopping stories though. Just the same old stuff year after year with crazy shoppers, crazy drivers in the mall parking lots and such.
  • Holy crap, Jan!!! I'm glad you finally got it :-)
  • Holy cow Jan. That's insane!!! So glad you found it though.

I have no stories. I really haven't done any shopping that required me to look all over for a gift and I have avoided 'peek' times.
  • You are the Daughter in law du jour! Geeeeez! I hope you are the only one who got her that!!
  • Every year I've been wanting to get those Christmas DVD's for Ruby (you know, those stop animation Rudolph and Santa movies) but I can never justify spending $20 on one half an hour movie especially when it's on TV for free, so I never do. Well this year I was browsing through the DVD's at Costco and I found a boxed set (ALL 7 OF THOSE MOVIES) for $29.99. I bought it and I'm so exited I can't wait for her to open it because I want to watch them with her.
  • Wow, Jan, you are a great daughter-in-law!!!  And I'm so glad you got what you were looking for!!!

I wasn't doing Christmas shopping, but, rather, shopping for myself the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  I was in Lane Bryant and went over by the clearance rack (pretty much the only place I shop!).  There were these two ladies running around, not seeming to speak much English, without shirts on!  Apparently they had decided to just try on all their clothes in the middle of the store.  They had totally usurped the table with the folded stuff on it and had piled all their stuff on top.  I saw multiple people stop to look at the t-shirts on the table and start looking at the stuff the ladies (I use the term loosely) had left there, only to have the ladies come running around the rack in their bra and skirt to yell at them!  I got what I needed and got the heck out of there!

  • lol, I just had to comment...I just read your post and it totally made me laugh out loud.  The irony of where you ended up!  I even had to read it aloud to my DH.  Thanks for the laugh :)
