Business Idea?

I think I have a good idea for expanding of a business venture with a top company BUT I have NO CLUE how to propose this without seeming like an average Joe Schmo with an idea BUT also don't want to pitch it to a company and they take the idea.....anyone know how this stuff happens?  How can I protect my idea?

My DH is very business savy and apparently it is rubbing off......maybe it is also the Donny Deutch "The Big Idea" show being on my tv at night when we go to bed?

Re: Business Idea?

  • If you have an idea, the only way you can protect it is if you get a Patent on it. So, I would just look up the Patent's office and see what the process is for filing your idea. I think the price depends on the type of idea it is or invention it is.
  • There is a women in entprenurship business program at the Fisher College at Ohio State.  I don't have the website address with me, but if I find it later I'll post it.

I went to a seminar by this group a few months ago and they said that there's really no way to protect your idea (unless it is an invention and you get a patent).  Basically if it is a good idea, someone else will think of it and if it is a bad idea then there's no point.

  • I am pretty sure you can Patent an idea, not just an invention. Also, when I was in college my copyright Law Professor told us how to patent/copyright the poor mans way, hehe. Write your idea down, date it and seal it in an envelope then mail it to your self and don't open it (so I would do like 3 of them for back up or incase you must open one for proof). Then, you have proof that you had the idea first and it has an official date stamp from the post office.
