Sleepless Night

So last night my DH and I had the crap scared out of us.  At about 1:00am we heard a bunch of noise beside the bed where one of our dogs sleeps, so knowing that sometimes he gets caught under the bed my DH feels down there and tries to get the bed off of him.  I am walking around the bed at this point freaking out b/c all the comotion, I flip on the light and see out 4 1/2 year old German Shepard mix having a seizure!!!  I knew it was a seizure b/c I had a dog growing up that had them on a regular basis.  This is the first one this dog has ever had.  So after getting him calmed down my dh and I try to go back to bed (b/c the vet said just to bring him in in the morning) well I couldn't sleep b/c I was shaking and every time I would look down on the floor at him I would start crying because my dh was sleeping down on the floor with our poor little "baby".

Well we took him to the vet today and after some basic tests it appears as if nothing is wrong with him.  Go figure!  So we are to watch him and if he has another one within 4 mos we are suppose to take him back for more tests.  Let's hope that doesn't happen!

Needless to say I am ready for bed tonight, but like my dh said every little sound we both will be jetting out of bed to make sure everything is ok!

Anyone else had any experiences like this??

Re: Sleepless Night

  • I've had that exact experience!!  Tucker (german shep./lab mix) started having seizures a few years ago, around the age of 2.  He thrashes around and shakes badly, and normally loses control of his legs so he can't walk at all.  At first it was terrifying to watch or deal with, but I'm kind of used to it now.  We've taken him to the vet a few times, but all the tests they've run have come back clear.  They said he's probably epileptic.  We put him on phenobarbitol, and he's done so well with it.  He went from having a seizure every week or 2 to having none in the past 4 months.  And the medication doesn't make him drowsy or different in any way.

I know it's scary, but the vet said the seizures aren't painful, so they don't bother me too much anymore.  I just hold him and pet him and comfort him until he's out of the seizure (usually about 3 minutes).  Good luck!

  • That is so scary! My Cocker Spaniel used to have them ALL the time. Our vet recommended that we wrap him tight in a blanket and talk softly to him everytime that he has one or when we think one is coming on. That might help him pass them if he has another one. Im glad to hear that everything seems normal...hopefully you won't have to go throug that again!
  • OMG that is so sad. I've never had that experience with a pet before. I just wanted to say I'm glad he is okay and I hope he never has another seizure.
