White elephant suggestions please!

We're going to a friend's Christmas party this Sat. and they're having a white elephant exchange. We're at a complete loss as to what to bring! It will mainly be couples of '25-30 somethings'.  Any ideas for gifts around $20?? Thanks so much for any suggestions you have!!

Re: White elephant suggestions please!

  •

Things I have seen thus far this year
    board game
liquor (i think the husbands work is a bunch of lushes)
gift card to rest or the movies
    dvd
osu anything (it is columbus after all :)

  • Is this a "true" white elephant exchange?? Where you bring something you have that you no longer want? Or is it one where you buy something brand new that someone would actually want?
  • We do the same thing with our friends each year.  Ours is $20-$25 a person so this year we bought:

    1. In the Army Now DVD
    2. Ghiardelli chocolate
    3. Handheld massager
    4. Party lights with a Tiki theme
    5. Maglite flashlight
    6. Page-a-day calendar

Ours is supposed to be a mix of joke gifts (the DVD and lights) and useful (everything else).  I am still considering heading to Lion's Den and picking up some magazines to round out our gifts.
  • I bought this handheld game called "20 Q's" for my dad this year. It's only $10 but it looks like a great little gag gift. Supposedly, you think of something (the more random the better) and after answering questions of yes or no, the game will guess what your thinking. My dad likes to fidgit with things so I thought it looked cool.
  • I have seen White Elephant exchanges done with gag gifts, and with REAL gifts.  The White Elephant part just means that you can steal rather than open a gift.

Do you know which way it will be?  Personally, a $20 gag gift is OFFENSIVE to me.  I would literally NOT GO to the party, as it is a total waste of money, storage and/or garbage dump space.

Otherwise, to answer your question and jump OFF of my soap box...
    1.  wine and wine glasses
    2.  big blanket (I did this for our family exchange)
    3.  thermos/flask with coffee or booze

  • I'm pretty sure that it's for real gifts not 'reject/gag' gifts. It seems like every "white elephant" in the past 3-4 years has been "real/good" gifts so I think that is why I'm leaning towards "good" gifts! Thanks for the suggestions so far!! I appreciate it!
  • I agree, Kristy! Just seems kind of mean.

I've given people toilet paper, air freshner, soaps and for another chocolates.
  • I always do $20 to Chipotle.  Seems to go over well and I don't really have to think.  But if the party is full of people that don't like Chipotle...then it probably wouldn't go over well.
  • If it is something you can buy for $20, I just got back from Crate and Barrel and they have the cutest snowflake glasses (which I think are for liquor, but I'm giving them as juice glasses) for $2.95 each!  I have been buying them like crazy and giving a set of four for like $12!  Just an idea!  Good luck!
