Addison Hope birth story

XP from Cleveland Babies board -

Hi everyone!  I saw that Shanna posted about my baby girl arriving a bit early (thanks, Shanna!) and just thought I would thank you for all your kind words and fill you in on Addison Hope's entrance into this world.  As many of you may know, I am battling breast cancer and have been doing so since May.  Amazingly, I have had some chemo treatments and a mastectomy all while being pregnant.  My OB has been keeping a very good eye on us and I had been getting U/S's about every 2 weeks.  The baby looked great and the pregancy was just going perfectly.  I was 31w and 3d on Tues, November 27th.  I hadn't been feeling well for a few days and decided to call my doc that morning to tell him this.  I didn't think much of it, but he is extra cautious with me and instructed me to head to L&D.  As soon as I got there and they hooked me up on the monitors, we knew something was wrong.  Baby's heart rate was really low - in the 60's.  Usually she was in the 150's - 160's.  The heart rate kept fluctuating and my doc knew it had something to do with the umbilical cord.  We were hoping she was just grabbing it or laying on it and would eventually stop or move off of it.  Of course, this never happened.  After a few hours of this continuous pattern, my doc decided it was time to get her out of there.  He thought if it continued, we could lose her and he wasn't willing to take that risk.  By this point, it was evident that she would be much safer outside rather than inside of me.  They rushed me in for an emergency c-section and put me under general anesthesia.  At 5:37pm, little Addison blessed us with her presence.  She weighed 3lb., 6 oz. and was 16 1/2 inches.  Her size still amazes me as I was barely showing (ask Shanna!).  I am so grateful she was as big as she was!  Anyway, Addison had gotten herself into a little pickle and had the cord tightly wrapped around her neck 2 times.  I thank God all day every day that he gave me a sign to get to the hospital.  My "not feeling well" had nothing to do with her situation...it was simply my angels from above saving my little girls life.  Gosh, I cry every time I think about how lucky we are.  Neither my cancer treatments nor my surgery caused this.  Addison was just a really active baby and moved around all the time.  I can tell already that she is going to keep us on our toes!  She is the sweetest, most beautiful thing I have ever laid my eyes on.  We are so in love!!!  She will be in the NICU at OSU.  Just an FYI, OSU is actually a level III NICU though I've seen some of you post before that Riverside is the only one in town.  I have been extremely impressed with the care that we have received at OSU and would recommend it to anyone.  Addison will be there for a few more weeks.  I am hoping to have her home by the new year and really believe that might be possible.  She is an overachiever just like her mommy and daddy!

Anyway, that's the story of our little miracle.  I will try to keep you all updated on her progress.  I wish everyone healthy and happy pregnancies and happy holidays!

I have a website that I post on to keep people informed of how everything is going with me (and the cancer) and now Addison.  You're all more than welcome to check it out.  http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kristifrazier

  • First of all, congratulations!

Secondly, if you'd like to talk/vent/cry, I'm happy to talk. I know what a rollercoaster the NICU can be.

  • I have to agree with everyone...what a strong and wonderful woman you are! That is such an incredible story and my heart goes out to you and your family. I hope your beautiful baby girl gets to come home with you soon and I wish you and your family a very happy and healthy 2008!

  • What a wonderful story! I'm so glad everything turned out fine. I hope God continues to bless your family.
  • Wow, what a miracle that everything worked out despite your diagnosis.  I think you know how lucky you and the baby are - I unfortunately have a cousin who is currently not so lucky, she lost her baby and the cancer is really aggressive.  I am thankful to see that it's not that way for everyone!!

Congratulations and bless you and your little one!!

  • What an amazing story! Congratulations on your new little arrival! I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.
  • Wow, your story is amazing.  I can't believe how incredible it was that you weren't feeling well and the Dr just "checked" to be sure.  I'm so happy for you, your baby and your family!  What a miracle.  :)  Best of luck to you and your baby's on-going health.
  • OMG. I'm a frequent reader of this board but somehow had missed you're story. Not only is your little girl a miracle, but you are too. May God watch over your little girl and help her grow and become healthy enough to come home. And watch over you and cure you! So many prayers and smiles are being sent your way!
