Gunshots?! Scary!

So I'm sitting here at home an hour ago, having a glass of wine and wishing I had some crafting talents instead of the mess I'm making out of these homemade gifts.

I hear two popping noises outside, and they don't sound like anything besides maybe fireworks or god forbid, gunshots. I don't hear any more noises (because who ever sets off just two fireworks?) so I get kind of freaked out and get away from the windows and call DH.

I ask him if I'd know what gunshots sound like and he mentions that we kind of live in a rural area, and then he realizes it's 10 at night and not exactly legal hunting time. But I think I'm crazy and we hang up. Two minutes later I see three police cars coming down the road, lights and sirens blaring.

They stop at the house three doors down and talk to the teenager/college-age kid who's the nephew or grandson of the couple who lives there. I didn't see an ambulance show up, so no one was hurt, thank goodness. But they were walking around that house and the one next to it with their flashlights out like they were looking for something.

I had seen a car leave from there when I first went to the window, so I thought I'd call the non-emergency line and let them know. So I called and said where I lived and that I had seen a car leave after I heard what I thought were shots. I told them what kind of car, but the dispatcher said, "Oh, that's not the one they're looking for."

So...It's great that apparently everything's fine, but I'm really freaked out that I was apparently right in guessing I heard gunshots!
