XP: Baby & Healthcare Flex Spending Acct

I posted this over on Money Matters, but I thought you ladies can help, too!  Thanks!

We have no clue what to put in our flex account for the upcoming year. We think we have the birth covered for myself (500 deductible + 1000 yearly max thru insurance), but are not sure what we need for the baby.

People keep mentioning "wellness checks". Does that tend to be a regular office copay, or is it different? How many would they do in the first 7 months? Anything else we're not thinking about?

Thanks!!

Re: XP: Baby & Healthcare Flex Spending Acct

  • I think it depends on your insurance.  Ours covers all baby visits with no copay or anything.  However, I believe you have a wellness check at 2w, 4w, 2mo, 4mo and 6mo and that's not to mention whenever the baby is actually sick. Plus, if you decide to get an RSV shot around Oct/Nov usually ins. doesn't cover it but I think you can use your FSA.
  • We had I think....6 weeks, 2 month, 4 month, 6 month, got the flu shot at 8 months, 9 month and 12 month appts. Jack's been in probably an additional 4-5 times, but Sumner hasn't needed to. Jack's been in additionally for reflux, weight gain, and an upper respiratory. He's also been to one specialist and 2 diagnostic tests through Childrens. So I've paid 7 copays for Sum, and about 12-14 for Jack. (So far, up to the 9m appt.) WHEW! Hope this helps!
  • Oh...and our 2w/4w appts were at 4w and 6w b/c that's when they were dischcarged from the NICU....ad another copay on there. Geesh...kids are expensive! LOL!
  • Every pedi I talked w/ had 7 wellness checks in the first year.  I put in $120 for wellness checks and unexpected sick visits/meds.
  • Just an fyi...some plans have a Child Wellness $ Max (most MMO plans do). For example, most MMO PPO plans limit Child Wellness to $500 per year (this means, MMO will only pay a max of $500). So you'll want to check your plan. Does your employer (or DH's if that's whose plan you are on) have an insurance broker you can contact to help you? If not, call your insurance's customer service and ask them if there is a child wellness max and how your plan covers them. Most are copays unless it's an HSA.
