Recommend your dishes

I randomly posted on Money Matters about my everyday dishes (wedding gift, started chipping within a month or so), and I got several replies that lead me to think I will be successful at getting either cash or merchandise credit at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Looking at BB&B's website first, because I might get merch credit, I like these: http://tinyurl.com/38j4t6
but DH showed them to MIL and she said that with stoneware, if you don't put liners between everything, they scratch pretty easily. Is that really true?

What type of dishes do you all have? Feel free to give non-BB&B options, in case we get cash back.

*Disclaimer: DH does not like Fiestaware, but feel free to argue your case :)

Re: Recommend your dishes

  • I think your MIL is right about stoneware.  However, depending on how you feel about the scratches (perhaps they give the dishes character :)) you may still be able to go with those.

We have Fiestaware.  bummer DH is anti!  We ended up with the Fiestaware b/c we could mix colors and the pieces are easy to replace/add to.  I am a very girly girl, so I wanted pink and purple.  DH is a manly man and was not having anything to do with pink and purple dishes...imagine that :)  So, we were able to compromise with dark purple and a man'y-ish green.  The colors look great together and I think they are fun on the tables.  The other bonus with mixing colors is that any misc. serving pieces you have would be cute too.  I am not sure what DH's issue with Fiestaware is, but maybe you could get a manly color that you could both agree on.  The navy is nice and so are the reds and oranges.  The dishes themselves are very strong.  I always wash them in the dishwasher and am not especially careful with them when I put them away or when we use them.

Oh yes, one more thing, b/c Fiestaware has been around for a million years, you can get really fun, discontinued pieces @ places like North Market to add to your collection as accent pieces.

    Sorry so long!  HTH!!

  • Our everyday dishes came from Target, it's the solstice design.  Our china was a gift from my mother.  She bought my china when I was a little girl and we lived in Japan.
  • Ooo Ooo!  I just got new dishes and I love them.

    * Disclaimer:  I like plain, white dishes.  I do a lot of cooking and don't like the way colored dishes can make your food look funky.

We bought Everyday Restaurant Dinnerware from Williams Sonoma.  Right now, the 30 piece set is $69.99 (5 6-piece settings - dinner plate, salad plate, cup, saucer, and soup plate).  We got 2 of those plus 12 cereal bowls from the same line.  IMO, the best thing about them is that they are dishwasher, microwave, oven and broiler safe.

  • i only like corelle dishes for the house
they are light, durable and come in ALL kinds of designs and are affordable...

can be bought locally at places like target and meijer...
  • I've had my Longaberger dishes for YEARS. I love them. They don't scratch or stain.
  • Our dishes are from Crate and Barrel and I love them!

Im very plain jane when it comes to dishes, but I liked the square shape to them...it gives them a little extra umpf.
  • Well, you know I love my wedding dishes, but it's a completely mute point since they are discountinued. :)
  • Ours are Colorwave by Noritake, and we got them at BB&B (ours are green). We haven't broken or chipped any of them and I'm pretty rough with them. You can scratch them, like if you are cutting through a steak and are grinding on the plate, but it's pretty hard to do.

  • stoneware and earthenware do scratch easily. Anything called porcelain or china is fired at a higher temperature and is less prone to chipping or scratching.

I have Brasserie from Williams-Sonoma and love them. Like a PP, though, I like plain white dishes. I have other things for color, like placemats and napkins.
  • Our everyday dishes are the handpainted ones from JC Penny. They are a lot like stoneware. Here's why I don't like them for everyday dishes:

They are too heavy, they take up too much room in the dishwasher, they take up too much room in the cabinet, and they scratch and chip easily.

If I were to choose everyday dishes, I would go with correlle dishes like someone else posted. I would even let Ruby handle these because they are practically break proof and lightweight enough for her to set the table for dinner.

  • We have what Jody81 has and love them. We have them in graphite.
  • I am not much help, because I abviously have a smalll (okay, large) Fiestaware addiction. Is it the style he doesn't care for, or just all the colors?
  • Steph - He's just old and remembers a time when Fiestaware was not thought of as lovingly as it is today, I think....?  He explained it to me once (sigh)

I think I am going to vote for stoneware - probably the one I linked over the one that Jodi and Meghan have, because we like square plates and have some clear dessert plates that are square.  I figure if we get several good years use out of them, we may not care as much about scratching because we'll have a toddler (or two) by then and might want to go with the old stand-by unbreakable corelle.

Seriously, large chips are coming out of the current ones, so scratches are nothing.

  • Our everyday dishes are from Denby.  They are stoneware, but I've not had an issues with scratching.  One of the things I LOVE about my Denby (and most stoneware dishes in general) is that they are oven-safe, freezer-safe, dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe.  We love our pattern, but it was discontinued earlier this year.  Overall we love our Denby dishes and I would recommend them to anyone.  The only downside is that they are on the expensive side.  Our everyday dishes cost more than our china (but we use our everyday dishes everyday :) and we have yet to use our china (after 4.5 years of marriage)).

  • Well then, he is just no fun! ;)
  • Our normal plates are retired hand-me-downs from the Pfaltzgraff/Nautica line, but we got rice bowls from BB&B for our wedding in the same style as Jody & Meghan, and love them. If we were to replace our dishes, I'd definitely consider them. I haven't noticed any scratching yet.

  • I'm with several of the other girls - we have Noritake Colorwave (in blue) and love them. Over 3 years of wear and they're still in perfect shape. I really like all the new accent pieces they make now - fun extra plates with designs or for the holidays. Love 'em!
