Bosses Christmas Gift Question

What do you ladies do for your bosses for Christmas? I used to never get mine anything until I got this job. Now, someone organizes getting money together and goes and buys the gift. We just got an email about it yesterday to give money for our supervisor and manager. I really do not have the money to be giving to them between all the other Christmas gifts I need to buy, the baby coming, and getting our house done. What do you ladies do?? They didn't set an amount (thank god!), but...

Re: Bosses Christmas Gift Question

  • This topic sort of pisses me off and it was a HUGE ordeal with where I used to work.  I worked for a small privately owned company where we would all chip in $20 for a gift for the boss and his wife (wife was treasurer and would just do payroll)  This amounted to a RIDICULOUS amount of money/gift for someone who clearly does not need it!  Finally one year we thought to donate the money in their name to an organization close to them and they seemed genuinely touched by this sentiment.

Off topic, but I would probably ask what was being done and want more information.  This way, you can base yourself on what to give.
  • We have 13 people on our team and everyone donates between $10 and $20. We've gotten our boss (manager - we do not have a supervisor and we do NOT donate to our director) all kinds of things like a CBJ jersey with her favorite players name on it, gift certificates to Charles Penzone, Mitchell's gift cards, etc.  We never set a price limit of how much to donate. It's always just worked out that way.

Now my boss goes crazy for us at Christmas.  Each of us (remember there are 13) get a $20 gift card to our favorite place to shop (she knows us all too well) and then another gift to open, like a mug full of candy, or a basket of candy, or an inspirational plaque, etc. And she takes us all to lunch and then lets us out early. She's not allowed to expense lunch either!!!

I would give what you feel comfortable with or do something on your own. Maybe make him/her cookies or something.  And honestly just write a card if money is tight. I'm sure they understand you have a lot going on right now!
  • I am in a similar situation except, I am my manager's only direct report.  I have no idea what to get for him.  Any ideas?
