Ori-pei dog breeder?

Does anyone know of an ori-pei dog breeder somewhere in the Ohio/PA area?  I have heard such horror stories of buying dogs at pet stores and am in search of a reputable breeder.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks ladies :)

Re: Ori-pei dog breeder?

  • Not to be a downer, and I am not trying to flame you or anything, but Ori-pei is not a breed, it is a mutt. You will not find a reputable breeder of mixes, and are likely to run into the same kind of problems you do with pet stores (health issues, etc) with whoever you buy it from.
Also, because it has no breed standard, nothing you read about this type of dog is necessarily accurate, it may take the tempermant, size, appearance etc of either breed or some mixture of the two. So, don't take any claims that are made about them for granted (that they are quiet or good tempered or anything like that).

If you really want this specific mix, you should look at petfinder or at shelters to find one that needs a good home.
  • I appreciate your input, I'm trying to help out a friend.  I'll pass that information on.  Thanks.
  • Ditto Manday.  And as someone who recently got a rescue pug mix, please please please check out the northern OH rescue groups that do a lot of rescuing from the many puppy mills up there.  Pugs are being SO overbred right now because of puggles, and there are so many puppies with a lot of the Ori-pei qualities that need homes and are much less than thousands of dollars she'll spend at a reputable breeder.

Additionally, if your friend is dead-set on getting one of these, and none of the thousands of pug mixes or shar-pei mixes on petfinder will do, have her check www.fci.be which is the website for the international group that does recognize the ori-pei as a breed.  AKC doesn't recognize it, and it's going to be harder to find a quality breeder because of that, but if she really wants a good breeder, find one who only breeds titled dogs (there's a big difference between titled and papered) and only sells spayed/neutered puppies.
