Job/interview questions help (long)

1) I would just say you're taking a long lunch with a friend and you'll make up the time if you don't feel you want to tell your current employer.

2) I wouldn't worry about it...just go forth with your interviewing and things.  You can't feel bad for being a better candidate if you get the job.  Now, if she gets the job over you, how will it make you feel?

Good luck at your 2nd interview!

Re: Job/interview questions help (long)

  • You are way overthinking! If you want the job, then go for it, if you are best for the position you shouldn't feel bad at all. Also, as for an excuse, I usually use a doc, dentist, eye or some type of appt but if you have already used those up lately just say a family member will be in from out of town for the day and wanted to take you to a long lunch...I have used that one before :)
  • I would simply tell your employer that you have an appointment.  There really shouldn't need to be an explaination beyond that.  For the second situation, I would simply leave it alone.  You aren't stealing any opportunity from anyone else, if you are more qualified and you get the job, good for you.  You earned it :)  I realize you will feel awkward, but there isn't anything you can really do about it.  Like you said, you aren't close.  If you were close, I would just mention (if it came up) that you applied for the same job as well.

    Good luck :)
  • Thanks for your thoughts...I knew I was probably overthinking it. :) The thing is, I work in a office of four people...so we're all relatively close and we tend to tell each other stuff like what our appointments are for. So I think being vague might be a tip-off. But I do like the idea of lunch with someone who's in from out of town...I think I'll use that. Thanks!

And Allison, I haven't really thought about what I'd feel if she got the job. I think I'd be happy for her, because she does want to move up here to be with her husband, and like I said, I do like my current job reasonably well. I wouldn't want to spend the next 10 years doing the same thing, but I'm OK here now. But who knows how I'd actually feel until it's decided either way.
