What to put in apple cider...

I want to make a tastey alcoholic beverage for pre-football game festivities...I was thinking hot cider...but what type of alcohol should I use? Also should I put other stuff in? I've never made it this way (usually just drink it cold).

Re: What to put in apple cider...

  • I Googled it and one yummy suggestion I found was Cinnamon Schnapps
  • Ditto Captain Morgan (or any spiced rum).

    Sounds yummy!!

  • I found two for you that sound yummy!

Spiked Apple Cider (from Rachel Ray)
    2 quarts apple cider
    1 cup apple brandy
    2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
    2 teaspoons ground cloves
    1 teaspoon ground cardamom
    1 teaspoon curry powder
In a large pot, combine all the ingredients over high heat and bring to a simmer. Lower the heat and keep warm. To serve, strain through a fine mesh sieve into a heatproof pitcher and pour into mugs.

Hot Apple Cider with Rum (from Emeril)
    1 apple
    2 teaspoons whole cloves
    1 orange, thinly sliced
    2 quarts apple cider
    1/2 cup light brown sugar
    1 teaspoon allspice
    Pinch grated nutmeg
    1 cup dark rum
    Cinnamon sticks, garnish
Stud the apple with the cloves. In a medium pot, combine the studded apple and remaining ingredients except the rum. Slowly bring to a simmer over low heat. Simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and add the rum. Discard the apple. Ladle into mugs and garnish each with a cinnamon stick. Serve immediately.

  • spiced rum and cinn. sticks :-)
  • I've made the Rachael Ray one and it's awesome.  My friends all love it, even the ones who don't like cider.
  • Dark rum and Penzeys mulling spices...SOOOOO good!  (simmer, don't boil!)

  • My favorite "adult" cider is Equal Parts cider to white wine of your choice simmer on the stove. or Captain morgan's. HTH
  • World Market has great mulling spices that you mix with the cider and brandy.
