I know there is Avesta. There is another (maybe two other) newer restaurants on Sandusky (one across from Mean Bean). Anyone been? Recommend?
Re: Delaware Restaurants
Bag of Nails - bar food basically, we're not impressed
Nova - we've not been, but we've heard it's okay and the portions are huge
Chandra's bistro - strange mix of asian/sushi and pasta - recently opened with mixed reviews (we've not been)
Brown jug - over-priced, not great food
Avesta - great food, bad service, currently closed. There was a feud between them and property owner and all of Delaware got involved. She was going to shut down for good, but she's reopening in a month or so next to the Strand on Winter. Something new is going in where Avesta was, but not sure what it is.
This is basically a list of what's downtown - we don't really go anywhere else. If we were going out tonight, we'd either go to Buns or try out Nova. When family's in town, we usually take them to Buns, because people generally like it. Amato's Wood Fired Pizzas are awesome, but they are primarily a to-go place (1 table).
I had a salmon pasta that was different from anything that I have had before. It was good, but when I go again I will be getting the steak.
It also has a neat little bar. I hear they have good martinis.
Old bag of nails is like the rest of them, which usually people love Old bag, interesting to here you say you weren't impressed. Have you tried the fish and chips?
and I thought there was something next door to the Avesta place but can't think of what it is now.
Nova sounds interesting. Chandra's sounds a little scary! Sushi and Italian? Bizzaro! And I think I may know the Amato family...maybe I could work that angle for some free pizza!
We went to Old Bag two weekends ago and got one of the meals free. It was a terrible experience. But yes, their fish and chips are very good, as are the pickles. But I ordered a sandwhich and it was like a test to see if I could figure out what they DIDN'T put on it that was supposed to be there. It was just dumb.
Oh and next door to Avesta = Amato's Wood Fired (review above)
I have wanted to go to hamburger inn, to see what all the fuss is about. But if you're looking for a nice dinner, I don't think that's it.
No matter what time of year, the service is always slow and food is usually over-cooked and/or cold.
Bun's although okay just isn't what it used to be.
Old Bag here is just not that good. DH and I have both ordered different things ( I don't do fish/seafood) and have just been underimpressed.
Avesta is pretty good. We had a good experience at Nova.
Gaylord's was not all that good (down the street from Mean Bean); it's owned by Old Bag if that tells you anything.
Brown Jug is okay during lunch, but stinks for dinner. It tastes like reheated food.
The Hamburger Inn--ah, an old favorite. Full of grease and all things bad for you. But it is surprisingly not so bad. They make most of their own food (i.e. fries, sticky buns/donuts) and the people who work there have been there forever. I can't say that it's top of the line food, but is your typical diner food. DH enjoys the cheeseburgers, and loves the all you can eat perch dinner (ick). I usually get breakfast. And a chocolate milkshake.
Buns is good, as is the Brown Jug. Traditional kinds of food. I have never had Nova, but I hear it is good, but maybe not good enough for the price you pay. Again, I have never been there, just what I heard. I have heard good things about Chandra's Bistro as well, but have never been there. I don't know if you are specifically looking for Downtown Restaurants, but there is a new restaurant on West Central right across from the hospital called Shorty's and it is mostly casual Italian, but has a variety of Subs, and Nacho appetizers too. VERY good, as well as a good price.
We agreed with all pp on Old bag, they are really super slow and the food is so so.
We love Nova, large menu with a variety of items, service can be slow, but i think worth it. I love the sweet potatoe fried! YUM!
Didn't get a chance to try Avesta bf they closed, hopefully will when they reopen.
We also love Bun's, good change of pace as far as faster service.
We tried Chandra's Bistro, but only had the Sushi, very good.
We stopped going to the Brown Jug years ago, just horrible service, food, and pop (if you can believe it!)
I cannot say enough about Amato's wood fired pizza....just awesome. And now they are making them in 12" so they are plenty big enough now.
Good breakfast can be found at Jack's Famous Diner (on 23) and the Corner Cafe (at the 36/37 split)
Happy dining!
