I've decided to update our kitchen. I need serious help.
1) I need to paint. The problem is our kitchen opens up to a hallway and a stairway. I could get away with painting the hallway a separate color, but the stairs are a no go. Basically the paint has to go through the kitchen, up the stairs, and into the open area between the upstairs rooms. I think this rules out bolder colors like reds or country yellow. I would love a country yellow kitchen.
2) We have a chair rail in the eat in area. There is wallpaper on the lower part. I'm definitely getting rid of the wall paper, but do I need to paint the top and bottom areas different colors? I've also thought about doing wainscoting, but I'm clueless. Would I have to take the chair rail and baseboards down to put the wainscotting up?
We have hardwood floors in the kitchen. Our countertops are blue formica, but I'm not too concerned with matching countertop colors because I'm hoping we can get new cabinets in the next few years.
I will try to take some pics tonight and post them so you can see what I'm talking about.
Thanks!
Re: Need Kitchen Help
I am no home renovating expert by any means but I will say this about the chair rails. Most people paint the bottom a darker shade and the top a lighter shade. We have a chair rail in our living room that it's a darker brown on the bottom and a baige/khaki color on top. However, I have seem some rooms w/ chair rails where the wall is painted the same color and it looks great! I would love for my living room to be an all over sage green with the chair rails.
I saw a home on TLC where the couple painted the top a rich chocolate color and the bottom a creamy pale barely-there pink. It looked GORGEOUS.
You could do a beautiful, saturated color in all of those areas without it being overpowering! I don't think country yellow would be too overpowering to go up the stairs and in the landing at the top. However, I love it when people use bright colors throughout their homes.
I'm partial to wainscoting Beadboard can get it expensive, though! If you would like to see pictures of a dining area with wainscoting without beadboard, once I get pics loaded of our house I'll email some to you, because that's how they did the walls there.
My thoughts exactly! I love it bathrooms and nurseries, too.
Thanks for the ideas girls. I'm intrigued by the pink and brown. I'll have to try and find a picture. I've been trying to look on rate my space and things like but I definitely don't have the decorating gene.
If you don't...or can't do a richer color throughout the kitchen....you could just do an accent wall! My gf wanted a red kitchen really bad, but hers opened up into the LR. She just painted the back 2 walls red and left the other walls the beige color that is in her LR. That way it gives a great pop of color without being overwhelming...or making the LR look odd!
That could work depending on the shape of your kitchen! Also, I'm partial to the same paint color above and below the chair rail. I think it's just a personal preference, and it'd look good either way.
Ditto Amy! I also like the same paint color on top and bottom of the chair rail in most rooms.
