Flowers in Clay

DH and I moved here in the middle of June last year, but we lived in an apt. until the end of November. This is our first house and our first time ever living in an area with clay instead of dirt. I used to garden with my mom and grandma and DH's mom had a garden he helped with. This year, we are not going to be that adventurous, but we would like to plant flowers around the house to spruce it up some.

Does anyone have any suggestions for flowers that grow well in this area? Any flowers I can have yearly (not have to keep replanting)? I know many people say they transplant dirt to grow. DH and I planned on adding some, but not a ton. Do we need to basically resoil the entire area we plan on planting?

I have seen Narcissus around (white with yellow). As well as others at Fall Parks that are pink or purple, or orange. I am not too particular about what we grow. My favorite flower is Star Gazer Lily (I dont expect to be able to grow it). I also love tulips.

Re: Flowers in Clay

  • Just buy some top soil.  They have bags for $1.30 at Lowes.  Basically 1 bag of dirt covers an area about the size of the bag, if that makes sense.
