**Duchess**

quick question?

so tomorrow is our home inspection and interveiw so i'm trying to compile a list of questions for the sw....so far i've got questions about daycare and average time until placement...thats it. there must be glaringly obvious things that i'm missing - any suggestions?

ps - i was so happy to see your escape from the black hole. its gonna happen - it really will.

Re: **Duchess**

  • Thanks, I hope you are right!

You are on the right track with questions. They will give you a TON of info and ask a lot of questions to help prompt you. Our Best Match visit was 3 hours long! We discussed everything from our pets to religion.

I would ask about visitation, personal rights, medical issues ( our kids come with Medi-cal), prudent parent rules ( choosing your own babysitter etc.), court visits...

You can also ask about detentions by area. For example, our city has the lowest detention rate in all of the county. That means we know we probably won't get called ASAP and when we do that child will be from another city so we will be doing some driving to visits etc. You and A can privately discusss how far you are willing to travel so when the phone rings you are prepared.

Also, ask about community workers, that is what they are callled here at least. They are available to transport kids to visits if you are not or cannot for safety reasons. Ask about respite care. (We are entitled to 12 hours a month at a co-pay of $2 an hour )

It can be overwhelming but the classes do help. They have tons of handouts, phone numbers etc. It won't seem so bad when it's broken down week by week, I promise!

If you have any other questions just give a holler.

    Good Luck!

  • Sorry to butt in - but I work in a pediatric clinic that sees a lot of foster kids (the hospital has the contract for medical care for kids in care.) Find out what you can and cannot sign for terms of medical decision making. Here in DC foster parents can sign for immunizations and routine care - but not for invasive procedures/admission to the hospital/etc.  What about getting emergency treatment at the ER? Stuff that you never hope that happens - but you need to know what to do.

Of course you may have covered this in your class..... :)

  • Great suggestions (from you both) - thank you!
