I know we've talked about this word before (or maybe I was on a different board) but can I just say how much 'tolerance' when referred to 'the gay lifestyle' bugs the cr@p out of me!
Last night I watched ABC's What Would You Do? And one segment was about people's reaction to a gay male couple in a straight sports bar (in NJ). So people react...yada yada...and then they interview some expert who says, and I quote, "Tolerance. That has become an American value." WTF??
It really p!ssed me off. Yes, I believe having the ability to be tolerant is good, but you don't tolerant who someone is. We don't tolerate hair color, skin color, or sexuality!
Argh! Vent over.
Re: Tolerance
I completely agree!
To me - "Tolerance" denotes a feeling of "I will put up with this, but I really hate it and you better not screw up JUST ONCE or I'm in your sh*t about it!!"
As where as I prefer this word - "acceptance". As in "I accept people's choices as they usually do not directly affect my life AND if it makes them happy, then who am I to judge."
Why can't we have more acceptance? What a nice world that would be....
KnS
oh I agree
I always think of how you can tolerate pain. You would get rid of it as soon as you could but you will tolerate it if you have to. That is not acceptance or equality. When ever a someone says it I think gee thanks for nothing. I think palin said it in one of the debates and I wanted to scream
