Sooooo I watched the Season Finale of one of my fave shows, Jon and Kate + 8, on Monday night. There is speculation that they may not come back for Season 5. I am hoping they'll stick around for a few more seasons.
But in the meantime, TLC has developed a new show so that the viewers can still get our dose of parents raising multiples. The new show is "Table for 12" and is about a family in Jersey with 2 sets of twins and one set of sextuplets. I watched about 20 mins of it....and I'm not sold yet.
One of the reasons I love to watch Jon and Kate is because they have the South Jersey/Philly accent (the accent which my family and friends have) and secondly they are a mixed couple with mixed Asian/Caucasian kids (which are future kids will be). So it's hits closer to home.
Have any of you tuned in to the TLC shows that feature large families? Like "18 Kids and Counting"? What's your take on having their personal lives filmed?
Re: TV: Table for 12 on TLC
I like to watch them when I catch them on. DH and I don't really like the 18 kids and counting. DH really can't stand it because he doesn't think that they are socialized enough and hates that they have to shop at discount stores. For some reason that really really bothers him and the fact that the babies and younger siblings are pretty much raised by the older kids and not the parents. Its kind of like the older children are becoming parents before they get to experience adulthood.
I like all the others though. I haven't seen the new one yet so I"ll have to try and catch it.
Little People Big World is still one of my favorites.
The only show I watch when I can catch it is J&K+8. I think the kids are absolutely adorable, I think the husband is really funny, and although Dh can't stand Kate (he thinks she's OCD) I think the lady does of pretty good job of staying sane.
18 kids and counting is a little annoying to me, don't know why...maybe because I just want to shake her by the shoulders and yell, "How the heck can you still walk!?"
I love the sextuplets on J&K+8... however, I hate Kate! She bothers me so much; I hate the way she treats John. He def puts up w/ a lot. I think she exploits the kids for all the freebies they get (i.e., trips and special treatments at all the places they go).
I've seen the Duggars, and what bothers me about this show is that it appears that the older children are raising the younger ones... and the mom is only a "oven for baking children." Like pp said, they are extremely smart. They lead an uneventful life, so the show can appear to be boring at times b/c not much action going on. It is entertaining though.
I actually did see Table for 12 on Tuesday, as I was curious about their story. I'm assuming they had fertility treatments if they have 3 sets of multiples. I wonder what made them try the 3rd time? You already have 4 children! They seem like a very down to earth family though, which is nice to see. The couple seems to be in love and care about each other, unlike John & Kate. It will be interesting to see how the show unravels.
There must be some fascination w/ multiples, and large families that TLC continues to produce these types of shows!

Like Jackie, I can't stand Kate. I mean, I really, really, really, really dislike her. I hate her attitude and I hate the way she talks to Jon. But having said that, I love the show. DH and I are obsessed with the sextuplets and I think if we ever saw them out in public, DH would kidnap Alexis and I would kidnap Colin. I think Kate enjoys the publicity and the freebies too much to not come back for another season.
I haven't seen any of the other shows. I think one of the reasons I love J&K so much is because they live a somewhat "normal" suburban, American family life. From the bits and pieces of the other shows I've seen out there, it seems like those families have much more alternative lifestyle. If I'm not mistaken, a lot of them are fundamentalist Christians and live out in the backwoods. There is nothing wrong with that, it's just not something that I can relate to. I relate to the Gosselins more because it's closer to what my life and the lives of my friends and family are like (without the 8 kids, of course).
