Moving to South Carolina! (?)

Hi Ladies, I am a former Boston Knottie and current Boston Nestie. DH and I have been married just under a year and have been thinking about moving out of New England for quite some time.

We've done some research and we have decided that we absolutely LOVE Charleston, SC. The area seems so nice (we haven't been for a visit yet). But we obviously have some concerns about moving where we have no friends/family.

The first thing we would need to do is find jobs, and then find a place to live. I work as an administrative assistant at a bank and DH is a manager at Enterprise.

I guess what I'm looking for at this point is ideas of nice places to live. We are thinking it would be best to rent an apartment first to make sure that we really want to stay before buying a home. We are looking for a quite neighborhood, close to downtown or the beach.

Any advice, suggestions, ideas would be greatly appreciated!

TIA!

Re: Moving to South Carolina! (?)

  • We are also considering a move from Boston to Charleston. Though I don't know how you came to the conclusion that you LOVE it having never been there.

Both of us are using monster.com and recruiters, as well as contacts down there for job hunting.

DH has an interview down there and a recruiter got him that interview. If we move down there, it will depend on the relo package, but we are looking at Mt Pleasant, James Island, and West Ashley. I'd love to live downtown, but it is too expensive since we'll have to pay our mortgage up here until we get a renter.

Another thing you should know is that SC's income tax is higher than MA and their property taxes are the same. So you won't be looking at a huge COL decrease. Also, you should know that the unemployment rate in MA is around 7 percent, and it is 14 percent in SC.

    GL!

  • I grew up in Charleston. I definitely recommend renting at first. There are many good areas, but you may want to live close to your work. Traffic can get pretty crazy. The James Island and Mt pleasant areas sound like good options for you. Downtown and North Charleston are hit and miss. If you go further north Summerville and Goose Creek are cheaper and newer communities are good options.
  • Hey I just wanted to wish you good luck!  My husband and I did the same thing moving from DC to Greenville, SC.

We rented an apartment for 6 months and paid the rent up-front.  The reasoning for paying up-front was 2-fold.  1, we didn't need employment varification to get the apartment since we pre-payed, and 2, that was one less thing for us to worry about while we were looking for jobs.

We wound up staying in the apartment 10 months, then moved into our home.   It was nice to have the option to extend our lease month-by-month while we looked for a house, so I suggest trying to find an apt that will give you that option.

I've never been to Charleston, so I have no advice on that particular area, but if you are religous I highly recommend getting involved in a local church right away.  It's a great way to meet people and make new friends.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies.

When I said we LOVE Charleston, I meant based on the reasearch we've done.

If we did move, it wouldn't be until after the 1st of the year, so we have talked about a long weekend trip to Charleston for our anniversary.

DH's company does have a location there and a transfer for him would be pretty easy, so it would be me that we'd be worried about. Luckily, we have time between now and January to save up some money so if I"m out of work for a little while it won't be so bad.

One of the girls on the Knot recommended a book from Amazon that I am going to purchase so DH and I can do some more reading.

    Thanks again.
