Myrtle Beach for Spring Break

Hi All,

DH and I are taking a mini Spring Break to Myrtle Beach in 2 weeks. We are trying to keep it cheap, so we aren't renting a car, and are hoping to stay in walking distance to some good/fun beach bars.?

Any advice would help-- also can you drink on the beach?

Thanks!?

Re: Myrtle Beach for Spring Break

  • p.s. we aren't really looking for the "spring break" scene, but I am sure we will encounter it whether we want to or not.?
  • I'm pretty sure you can drink on the beach, just not out of glass bottles.  I suggest just taking a beer coozie and then no one would know if you were drinking beer or soda.

Though MB is so spread out now, I can't imagine visiting there without a car.  I don't know how public transport is, but it may be worth looking into.  Broadway at the beach has several clubs etc.

  • I am originally from the Myrtle Beach area, and I agree that I can't imagine going there without a car. However, if you that is what you really want to do, I would recommend staying somewhere closer to North end of Myrtle Beach. The oceanfront hotels in downtown Myrtle Beach (where the Pavilion used to be) are nice, but the area has gotten very rough, and I don't know that I'd feel safe walking around at night down there. There are a few beach bars closer to the north end, such as Beach Bumz--still on Ocean Blvd. but not quite as much in the rough area. Broadway at the beach has a lot of fun bars and hotels, but not necessarily within walking distance to the ocean. If you're looking for low-key, I'd also recommend Murrells Inlet. They have a marsh walk with lots of waterfront restaurants/bars and most of them have live music at night. Dead Dog Saloon, Hot Fish Club, and Creek Ratz are some of my favorites! The closest beach to Murrells Inlet would be Garden City, and then you could just get a cab to take you to the restaurants/bars at night and it's not far at all! Hope this was helpful! Good luck! :)
  • Oh and I forgot to mention that I don't think alcohol on the beach is actually legal--you'll see signs posted that say it's prohibited in some areas. But as long as you keep it in plastic cups or coozies and don't take glass bottles, you should be fine!
  • Ditto previous poster about the alcohol. I also, wouldn't go without a car. I have to disagree with the area being so rough, that you wouldn't walk around at night. I  just don't see it that way, but I could be wrong. Our beach house is in Surfside, so we hardly visit that area. I would visit the clubs at Broadway, as well and just take a cab home.

  • Maybe someone who is a local can answer... Would a moped or golf cart rental be helpful?  I know I've seen them scooting around the beach, but I'm not sure what all roads you're allowed to have them on and if it would really be helpful or not.  If you're drinking though, then just do cabs.  You shouldn't be driving even if you had a car.

Are you flying there??? I am unclear why you won't have a car in the first place.

  • Hey- yes, we are flying (we get free stand-by) and figured that we could try to get by without a car (and the added expense). I think our hotel is pretty central on the beach (or downtown as you guys are saying).?

Our main plan is to just relax on the beach with some beers, and I think the majority of our "going out" will just be to casual beach bars. And it sounds like a taxi won't be a big deal either.?

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I will check those out. And pray for good weather.?

    ?

    ?

  • I understand that you can fly standby for free, but did you know it's only a 4 hour drive?  By the time you check into the airport, wait for a flight, catch a flight, get to myrtle beach, taxi, get to your gate, claim luggage (if you're checking,) Hail a cab, etc, won't you almost have 4 hours invested in it anyway?

And don't airline employees even have to still pay taxes on the tickets?

  • I would definetly drive, but that's just my opinion.  Public transportation isn't that great... they do have a trolley that runs "the strip".  Broadway at the Beach is great... they have a website, so check that out (Margaritaville, Senor Frogs... Revolutions, Crocodile Rocks-dueling piano bar, etc.)  I personally LOVE, LOVE, LOVE  Beach House Bar & Grill... 1205 N. Ocean Blvd. (not too far from the pavilion area).  They have a porch to sit on to "people watch" and awesome "Lemon Drop" shots, lol!!  We also like The Bowery but it's pretty "country"... you can get beer (Budweiser) or water... there are no other options in there!!  It's at "Peaches Corner".  HTH!!
