any reviews of roy's in pasadena?

the hub and i love anything that reminds us of hawaii. ?i've been scouring the interwebs for somewhere to take him for the big 3-0 this week, and want to stay as close to home as possible, so the west side is out (despite the gazillion fabulous options out there).

roy's has mixed reviews on yelp, but it's local and they have a good looking prix fixe menu. ?have you been there? ?i'd love to hear feedback.

gracias, ladies.?

Re: any reviews of roy's in pasadena?

  • I haven't been to Roy's in years, since I went to the original in Hawaii when it opened.  If it's anything like that, you're in for a treat!

I think Opee&Me just went there recently for her b-day, hopefully she will pop in and give a review.

  • I have not been myself, but I've heard surprisingly good reviews for a "chain" restaurant from people who are foodies. And I've heard really great things about the chocolate dessert (a souffle, I think).

  • Never been, but one of my roommates in college loved them.
  • I've only been to the one in Woodland Hills and it's yummy!!!  The short ribs are outrageously delicious and I'm not a big meat eater.  I say go!
  • Food is good, service blows big time...to the point I wouldn't go back and it was at lunch time without much of a crowd.

Have you been to Smitty's Grill on Lake?  Same ownership as the Arroyo Chop House and Parkway Grill.

Great food, solid service, nice ambiance, a good all around spot.  I'd make a reservation and ask for a booth though.

  • mindy, how funny - the other restaurant i'm debating is smitty's. ?and i've already made a reservation AND specified a booth.

i think what i'm going to do is to keep both reservations, drive the hub to pasadena, and when we get close i'll lay out the choices and let him decide. ?it'll be assy of me to call last-minute to cancel one, but i'm seriously torn.?

That is funny!  Good idea on letting the hub decide once you get there.  I guarantee you can't go wrong at Smitty's...I've been there more than 10 times easily and have never had a bad meal.

Let us know where you end up going, afterall!

  • Hi! I love Roy's!! The food is great! We love HI also so this is our fave place.  We live down the road and the quality of food is awesome.  We have eaten off of the prix menu about 2 times this past year and a couple times last year.  My family and I have tried almost all of them. Any questions?

The only thing I would not recommend was the cajun prawns. Unless you like super hot spicy food go for it! They were too hot for us, and we couldn't even enjoy it. They were over a bed of polenta with sauteed spinach. I have a pic also if you want to see?

We had fab service for NYE, our anniversary and the other times I have gone. (can you tell we love Roy's?) LOL However on this last visit for my birthday we weren't impressed with our waiter. Maybe they were too busy but he was just not attentive and spoke a mile a minute.

HTH let me know if you have ??'s.

Dh took me (and DD) to Roy's in Pasadena for our anniversary and we loved it there!  The server was really nice to us and they even brought out a little free dessert ice cream that said "happy anniversary" on it.  And to top it off, they took a 4x6 picture, framed it, and gave it to us.  The food was really good too.  For the price you pay (avg $25/person), I think it's worth it.
