Excercise Regimen?

For those nesties that work a crazy amount of hours in the day like me, what time do you set aside for excercise?

I just recently purchased a used eliptical machine and have been doing it in the evenings when I get home from work and before I cook. Last night we ended up eating dinner at 9pm (which defeats the purpose of excercise).

Re: Excercise Regimen?

  • Personally, I have not had any time to exercise... my schedule is nuts. I work during the day, and have rehearsals/performances some nights. Sometimes, when I get home, I am so tired, I can't even bring myself to finish household chores. However, exercising before dinner is a good idea, since it keeps your heart-rate up, and helps you continue to burn (or so I've heard). If you find you will end up eating dinner too late, maybe you should go walking after dinner...

  • Um, non-existant!

DH and I used to go walking when we got home from work... and then dinner would get cooked, and then we would eat, and yes, it was sometimes at 9pm.  However, Dh and BIL have started to do P90X, so I take advantage of that time to pickup the house, and start on dinner, and the dishes.  Honestly, it is out of laziness I don't get on the elliptical, or go for a walk around the park, or even do pilates videos in the family room while they do their thing!

  • I still work out (obviously not as hard as I was before, but the dr said it was ok since my body was used to it)...anyway, I usually get off from work at 5 and I'm at the gym by 6. For me, the biggest thing that helps is having a gym buddy. Even if it's your DH. Make sure you write in gym time in your planner that way you won't schedule things over it. I have one of those planners that breaks things down into 15 minute blocks, so it really helps me to plan my days better. If you have it scheduled and make it an important task to get completed, it's easier to get it done. I've also found that the days when I absolutely do not want to go to the gym because I'm dead tired or just don't feel like it, are the days I need to the most. I feel super energized afterwards, and it's good to know that I'm still trying to stay healthy.

Also, what about premaking your dinner meals ahead of time (or at least prepping ahead of time -- like making sure you have all the veggies cut up and the rice in the crockpot ready for you to add water and push the button)

Ok, this got long. I'm done :)

  • I'm trying to get back into exercising with baby steps. I'm getting to work a half hour earlier so that I can leave at 4:30. I head over to the gym and to the elliptical for 30-40min depending on how early I get there. By the time I leave it's 5:30, I'm home by 6 the latest. I get home, shower, change, and I'm cooking by 6:30-7. It's not a long amount of time to exercise so I try to get to the gym at least 3 times a week, I'm going to try to amp it up to 4 next week. We'll see.

I feel ya girly, it's not easy! Especially when in the back of your head your thinking about all the other stuff too. It helps me if I make a meal plan and do groceries over the weekend so that I don't have to make a put stop at Publix.

  • Oh Christine I wish I could leave work at 4:30pm. I work in Hallandale Beach now and I dont get out until 4:30. This is just going to take some getting used to I guess :/.

  • I usually get out of work at 5:30 go see my grandma at the hosiptal till 7 get to the gym by 7:30 and work out for an hour of cardio and go home prepare my lunch and by the time i showered and go to sleep its 10:30.

But the difference is i dont have to cook at night, only to prep my lunch, And DH always invents whatever if he is hungry. But he doesnt like to eat at night much either. I know people say we are crazy but its the truth.

  • Do you have a slow cooker? How about a few days a week making something in the slow cooker so that dinner is ready when you get home. If you can (this helps me a lot) prep the next days dinner and put it in the fridge. Like if your breading chicken, do it the night before. Defrost your meats, chop your onions, whatever so that it makes it faster. Heck, if DH is home leave the recipe on the counter and have him get started.
  • We exercise in the morning. We do about 45 and then some ab work.

I agree with christine, a slow cooker is awesome. We use ours all the time, esp on the weekends when we get home late from the restaurant.

  • jenny - you and i both work crazy hours - i've finally mustered the discipline to work out before work.  yes, that means that sometimes i have to be at the gym at 530a but i figured that if i can get up that early for work, i owe it to myself to do the same.  those days i wake up and get my hour of working out in are the BEST days.  totally worth it.
