Opinions needed - Trip related

BIL / SIL have tickets to Augusta for the Masters; however, they are unfortunatly not going to be able to attend.  The tickets cost them a total of $700.

BIL offered them to DH and a friend (for purchase of course), and DH is SUPER excited.  But friend doesn't want to spend the money.  BIL2 is sad BIL1 can't go, therefore, doesn't want to go either.

Now, I have the opportunity to attend the Masters (which is a HUGE deal in the golf world BTW - and has been sold out since the 1970s)!  My boss will TOTALLY understand, and will prob be jealous.  I have PTO saved up.  DH mentioned about staying a couple of days later to visit w/ my BFF and my family while up there, which will eat up more into my PTO (and maybe make me go into negative).

Now the kicker, we are going to Sarasota for a week in July, and if I take these days, I won't have enough PTO accumulated for the whole week.  Actually, I technically can't take any days off until July in order to have 40 days available.

What should I do?

1 - Go to Masters, but leave Tues night and return Thurs afternoon, so only take 2 days off (won't visit family / friends).
2 - Go to Masters and stay until Saturday, so take 3 days off, and visit family / friends.
3 - Have DH go alone (if he searches, he can find someone willing to go), and save $ b/c it won't be double the cost.

  • I say option # 2 - Go to Masters and stay until Saturday, so take 3 days off, and visit family / friends. 1 day more its not gonna kill you.

  • tough one... i know, i was somewhat in this situation.  I guess it depends what situation you are in? If  Masters isnt really your thing and you truly believe the money that will be spent can be used towards your other trip, I'd say let DH take a buddy that is dying to go and willing to dish out his part.

However if you truly want to experience this and go with DH go with option#2, not sure how flexible your job is, but if you do not have enough PTO would you be able to make up your time off during the week? Working something out with your boss?  This is what I ended up doing in my situation...

let us know what you end up doing!

  • If you already have a week long trip planned, then I would do option 2. I know visiting friends and family is probably something you'd love to do, but I would simply explain that I didn't have enough time off and you'll catch them next time.

    Oops! I meant option #1

  • Are these close family and friends who you rarely get the opportunity to see? Will you have other opportunities in the near future to see them again? If so, I say option 2. Just go to enjoy the Masters, skip the visiting with the family and friends, and that way you can still go to Sarasota!

  • I say # 1 and just explain that you didn't have enough time off to be able to stay since you have your vacation planned for July.

Or if you are worried about the amount of $$$ being spent # 3. But it sounds like you really want to go.

  • I would say look at it like the girls said, is the Masters your kind of thing? Can you afford to take the days off for Sarasota with out the PTO?
  • I'd go with Option #1 - even if you had an extra day - how many people (friends/family) could you actually see? I run into this problem every time I go home. There is never enough time  to see everyone. It's so hard to get people to commit to a schedule. Option #1 :)

  • I say option #1 - when else will you have the opportunity to attend the Masters?  Firends and family will understand that you didn't have enough time to visit this time around.
