Poll - is couple considered a family?

Do you consider you and your DH a family, or just a unit?  Does a child make a family?  What are your thoughts on the topic.

Re: Poll - is couple considered a family?

  • good question!!! Ya know i always said me and DH are a family but when people always ask "when are you starting a family"  I ask so does that mean DH and I are not one already?  I know what they are asking, when are we having our first child but i have also wondered the technicality of "a family"  Im interested on what people say....  DH says we are family me, him, and Linda (our dog)   heheheh

  • IMO the day I married my hubby I considered us a family..I think children add to the already existing family you created with your husband..
  • I've always thought of DH, the animals and I as a family <3

  • I agree I consider DH and I and the dogs our family. Since there will be no children (well if you don't consider dogs children) I do because they are just as much work. I do know what people are saying about children making a family but you have to start somewhere and I believe it starts with you and your H.

These are my exact thoughts.  But DH thinks that children is what make a family... so I ask him "what are we?"  He never has a good answer.

Dictionary.com defines a family as "parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not."

ditto!! right now we are a family of 2 (+plus our lil fetus Big Smile) but i always consider husband and wife a family or a couple...w/o them no children would be involved.  the children are additions to the family.
  • I see DH and I as our own little family, granted it's a small one, but we are a family. Like Mrs. Rod said, kids add on to the joy of the family, but right now, I'm happy with just the two of us.
  • When we went to the Bahamas on our honeymoon, customs asked us if we were 'family'. Because if you weren't you couldn't go into the next room together. We smiled and happily said "Yes! We're married!"

DH and I consider the two of us to be a family. He's always saying that he has to provide for our family. Right now we're a little family (no kids, no pets), but hopefully in a few years, we'll be a bigger family. But I agree with you girls, family begins with husband and wife.

And for that matter, my cousins, his cousins, my in-laws, my parents.....they're all my family, too. :)

  • I agree - I've considered us a family (DH, me and our 2 fur children) since the day we got married.  So, what about couples that don't ever have children - are they never considered a family then?

  • With or without children I consider us a family. DH feels the same way. We have 2 dogs though and they're part of our family tooWink
