Hey...I'm from the ND boards (well, a lurker..anyway) and didn't realize you're from Las Vegas!  I'm guessing you live in Vegas??

My DH and I are planning on buying a house there late summer (CA is too over priced).  Which area would you recommend?  Any help is appreciated...we are going to try to visit Vegas soon to get an idea of where things are at but would looove your input!

Thank you !!

Re: ****futuretworf****

  • I LOVE the siggy photo - OMG they are so cute.  We have a chocolate lab as well and he is my baby.  =)

Anyway, yes I live in Las Vegas and have for the past 12 years.  It was a hard adjustment for me to make coming from Florida but now that I have adjusted, I love it here.  Today is gorgeous (somewhat similar to San Diego weather) and the rest of the week is suppose to be equally as nice.

I have lived in the Summerlin area and Green Valley area both.  Personally I love the Summerlin area the best (west / north west area of town).  DH and I have a house in Desert Shores and for me, the area is perfect.  I do not have to drive far for anything and on weekends, that means a ton to me.  I am not sure what you are looking for, but if you give me an idea I can give you more of a general idea where to look.  Keep in mind that right now it is a buyer's market in Vegas but the housing prices could be ridiculous as well.

So, you lurk on the ND board too?  I personally love to read what is going on but feel like I am to old for the crew there (hell, I am 40) so I am glad I have company.

You can get me here or you can email me directly if you choose at kcbmarek at cox dot net.

  • Hey Kim!

Thanks for the compliment on my pups!  Yes, my chocolate lab is our baby and so is the yellow.  But, the difference b/w them is that my chocolate ACTS like a BABY!!!!  He whines and crys, literally!

Thanks for your insight!  I'm not sure exactly where in Vegas we want to relocate to but, it's not that much of a big deal b/c we both work from home.  If we could get a bigger house and be about 10 miles from the shopping centers (wouldn't be ideal for me...) and pay less for a home, we'd do it.  So, location isn't a big deal...it's the price on the home we're more concerned about.  Oh, and we don't want to live under the flight patterns from the airport. Oh, and we're also concerned with safety..of course!

I know there's a lot of new home developments in Vegas so we are looking into that as well as previously owned.

What do you like about where you live besides that everything is close by?  How far are you away from the strip? Is there an area in Vegas where it's known to be unsafe (like how there is in every city?)  Which neighborhoods should we stay away from?

Also, which school districts are known for "great" (if there's such a thing?)

Sorry, to bombard you with all these ?s!  I'm nervous b/c this will be my 5th move in 4 years!  Gosh I hate moving! Esp,. moving from the beach!

Yes, I lurk on the ND boards, then came out a few weeks ago, then got busy and lurked when i could and I'm trying to come out there more often.  I know how you feel b/c since I'm new, it seems like everyone already knows each other but, I think the more you post you'll feel like a regular.  I know this will take some time for me!

Anyway, thanks again for you help!
  • I will answer your questions in a minute but had to comment on the chocolate labs.  Ours whines and cries like a baby also ... OMG I almost died when I read that yours does that as well.  Yogi HATES not to me in the middle of it all and will sit at the laundry room door to the garage and whine/cry if the kids are outside and he can hear them.  Ditz could go sit at the side gate and see them but nope, he sits and cries instead.

Yogi is a big loveable baby!!!  Give me a few and I will respond to your questions and do not feel bad about asking because I know how you feel.

  • Oh my gosh!!! That's exactly what Magnum does!!!  He LOOOVES to cry and whine!  It's sometimes annoying but hilarious at the same time!!!  Oh and he loves to be in between us as well..

They both sleep on our beds..smack down in the middle...so you know our sex lives are affected!  aaaargh! and my DH babies both of them...almost to the point that he should of married them instead of me!

I guess chocolate labs are like that??  My yellow one is just so adorable...perfect size, listens to everything, can be easily trained but once she sees the water (ie lake, beach), she just goes crazy!!!

They're both our babies!!  Aren't they so family oriented?  They're the best!=)
  • You would think our chocolate labs were twins.  Yogi has to be sleepiing on DS bed with him - more like Yogi's bed by the time he spreads out.  Yogi has to be right there by you at all times as well ... literally!!!  It is so funny and sometimes annoying but we love him anyway.  How old is your choc baby?  Yogi is about 3 we think - when we got him almost 2 years ago from the shelter they estimated his age at 1.5.

Off to answer your questions now.

  • Hey Kim,

yes, they must be twins!!  Both of our dogs are 3!!!  Do you have a pic of Yogi?  Yes, annoying but lovable!  Magnum is about 65 lbs.  How much does Yogi weigh?
  • Home prices:  Your home price is going to depend on which area of town you live in.  I would highly recommend the Summerlin / Green Valley area.  Stay away from the North area near the base but then again the Northwest area is booming and a good locale as well.  In my honest opinion, you have to watch everything everywhere in this town.  I have heard of activity happening down by the strip that will the following week happen in Summerlin.  It is all over but primarily in the Strip and base areas.  You inquired how far my house in the Summerlin area is from the Strip ? about 10 miles and when I leave the base on Friday afternoon, I do not return to the Strip area at all.  I have all I need right within the realms of our home ? grocery stores (3) within minutes away, Target and Wal-mart are minutes away, mall is only a few miles, schools are right there.  I do not like to have to drive to get to places I need and in all honesty, I could walk to the grocery store if I needed to.  Oh!  Flight patterns ? you will need to be definitely in Green Valley or Summerline as the flight plan focuses mainly on the inbounds coming into Vegas over the Henderson area.  There was discussion about having some of the outbound traffic go over Summerlin but honestly if they do, we do not hear them.

Now the schools.  Be prepared that the Clark County school system sucks!!!  It is ranked 49th overall is greatness (1st being the best of course).  Now the elementary and middle schools in the Summerlin area have been great ? high schools are a different story.  No matter what high school you are at, there is constantly issues, i.e. student was killed walking home from Palo Verde a week ago and Palo is in the middle of Summerlin.  Killing at a high school in the North side of town several weeks ago.  High schools are tough here and I am thankful we only have 4 more years to deal with them.

    Keep the questions coming~~~

  • Thanks, Kim!

What do you think of the southwest area of Vegas?  I think it's still being developed??

Thanks for letting us know to stay away from the North end?  Is it bad to be by the base?  Is not a good place to be?? I'm new at this...

    thanks!
  • some of the areas by the base are not desireable.  The southwest is still developing and is a good area.  I have not heard bad things about it and I have not been down there in a LONG time but I do know there is a TON of developing going on.  There is a big master planned community down there and I cannot think of the name off the top of my head though.
