I saw your post on the travel board regarding cruises to Alaska.  We were looking at taking a cruise next year on NCL?  Can you tell me why you wouldn't recommend NCL?  I'm in the early stages of researching the trip.

Re: Futureworf

  • DH and I had cruised through Hawaii on NCL and had a blast.  The ship was gorgeous, staff very friendly and accomodating, food was great and activities were plentiful.  This is what caused us to go with NCL for our HM cruise through Alaska.  We upgraded to a balcony cabin which I loved!!!  The ship was very well kept and clean, staff was amazing, but the activities and food SUCKED!!!  DH and I had been told to make sure and try the freestyle dining restaurants - they were worth the additional costs and such.  Let me see, the Mexican was $0 additional and was actually very good; Chinese was $0 additional and okay; Le Bistro was $15 per person extra and horrible (we were seated at a table on a "patio" of the restaurant and it was massively noisy - staff did not care, food was warm at best, service very slow); Steakhouse was $20 per person extra and fair at best (staff was great, steak tasted as if it had been fried on a grill after sitting for a bit (it was prime rib), service was a little slow, and staff forgot to give us our "congrats" cake for our HM).  DH is 6'5" and food is his friend.  He could not wait to get off the ship.  Each morning we would go to the buffet to see what "meatloaf surprises" they came up with.  The eggs were beyond horrible and there was no doubt they were powdered eggs.  Room service breakfast was nothing special - enough to fill up DH and nothing left over if that tells you anything.  We did eat in the dining room a couple of nights and it was okay.  Service was very slow there and the food, warm at best.

We loved the itinerary of the cruise but unfortunately NCL left a horrible taste in our mouths.  As HMer's we were suppose to receive certain items.  No one told us we had to bring proof of our recent marriage then the guest service rep on the ship basically accused us of lying when we inquired why we had not received what we had been promised.  After sending a lengthy letter to NCL's corporate offices and telling them of the insinuations of us lying and the lack of acceptable foods and such, we were basically told "sorry".  There was not accomodation for the fact that this had been our HM or anything.   If it had not been for the scenery and the Alaska wilderness, we would have felt ripped off by NCL.  We saw some amazing things (including a brown bear and cubs out in the wild) while on the cruise and they are memories forever in our lives.  NCL will never get our business again.

So, if you are looking to cruise Alaska, go with either Princess on a north/southbound route or RCL/Carnival on a roundtrip out of Seattle or Vancouver.  Do not take our experience with NCL as a reason not to cruise Alaska.  It is somewhere everyone should go but I would also recommend taking longer then 7 days.  Go on a north/south route and spend several days on land at Denali and Kenai Fjords parks.

Let me know if you have any other questions or want to see some preview photos.  We did lots of research and did some great excursions - I personally loved the float plane excursion in Ketchikan.

  • Feel free to ask away!!!  Always consider booking your excursions outside of the cruise line if you feel comfortable doing so.  We saved $$ doing that and had an amazing time this way.

Our favorite excursions were the float plane of the Fjords in Ketchikan (maybe it was Skagway - I would have to look) and the whale excursion in Prince Rupert where we had a mother humpback and her calf right next to the boat literally for over an hour performing for us.  Amazing!!!
