Moving to Iowa- need help!

Hi! I am currently living in NY with my husband, and he was recently offered a job in Iowa. The job is located near Oskaloosa.

We are not familiar with Iowa at all, so I was wondering if anyone could help me learn a little about it before we go down to visit.

Any information you are willing to share would be great! The man my H interviewed with said that the town has a Wal-Mart and a bowling ally. Honestly, that scared me that he even had to say that. :)

I am looking forward to seeing how it is from other people.

Thanks in advance!

  • I saw your responsed in your Des Moines post. I agree that Pella might be more your speed. Oskaloosa is a blue collar, farming town.  It's not really awful, just very slow, laid back, very rural minded and nothing terribly spectacular. Pella is a neat little town. Clean, progressive, profitable, and not far from Oskaloosa.  AND - you are only 45 minutes from Des Moines too which is an incredibly cultural town filled with a lot of great, fun things to do.

    Welcome to Iowa!
  • My inlaws live there. It's pretty small. They lived in Des Moines and built a beautiful lake home there. They really had an adjustment period after moving there and still don't love it. Pella is VERY Dutch and very small town feel - more so than Oskaloosa.

    Did he take the job??

    Iowa is great!

  • My husband and I have lived in both Oskaloosa and Pella.  In our experience, Pella is much more welcoming.  It's only 15-20 minutes from Oskaloosa, 45 minutes from Des Moines and it's the epitome of the MidWest small town - very clean, more white-collar, church on every corner, you know your neighbors.  Pella is actually a little smaller than Osky, but they're both small enough that the difference doesn't matter.  If you have any questions you can email me at prohde@dbq.edu.
