Moving to the Quad Cities

Hello everyone,

My name is Jocelyn and I will be moving to the Davenport area with my 5-month old daughter and my husband who is going to Palmer chiropractic school in mid February of this year.

I have to say that I am on stress overload. I live in a small suburb now and I am having the toughest time trying to find a good, SAFE, family neighborhood. I am so nervous about living in Davenport. We don't have enough money or time to fly out there beforehand, so when we call ads about apartments, we're pretty much taking their word for it which is so scary. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations as far as apartments go? I feel like I am the only one making decisions for my family and I just want to cry. :(

Thank you so much for your time. :)

Re: Moving to the Quad Cities

  • Maybe if you offered the addresses you're considering, we could better help you.  I don't live in Davenport, but am fairly familiar with the various neighborhoods.  The Palmer neighborhood doesn't have a lot of great options yet for a family.  There are some metro type living environments, but the safest apartments probably aren't there.  Although overall, you should realize that Davenport is not a scary or unsafe town as decent size towns go.  I'm happy to give my two cents if I can help...just let me know what you're looking at.  Where are you coming from?
  • Sorry, I cannot offer any specific information about Davenport....but my DH is from Iowa and it does not seem like there are any truly bad places in the state. Everyone there is very friendly and it will not take you much time to really get to know people.

Did the school not make recommendations? Maybe there is a way to get in touch with current students and talk to someone who has already been there a few years?

I just moved to L.A. (talk about being unsure of where to live!) so I can sympathize with the stress of not knowing exactly where to go. But a landlord pays the commission on a realtor....so maybe that would be the way to go (there are realtors who do rentals as well as sales...)

    GL!

  • My Husband and I both go to Palmer.  Where are you from?  We really love the school and they are very understanding about family stuff.  I would suggest not going with the area around the school to live in.  It seems really unsafe.  We live in the Alexis at Perry Point apartments(they do have a website)  We love it here but it is expensive.  Another choice is anything owned by the barker company.  I think they own Indian Ridge Apartments they also have a website.  A friend live there and really likes it.  If you have any more questions let me know on here and I'll get you my e-mail address. Good Luck!

  • I'm with the previous poster. I lived in Alexis @ Perry Pionte too. They are a little pricey, but worth it.  Lots of Palmer students live there and it's safe and close to shopping and the interstate.  I like it. Nice, clean, well kept...you can NOT go wrong.

Be REAL careful of Davenport and Rock Island.  Look in Bettendorf in places close to the Interstate, as well as Moline.  Moline has some decent places too.

They are some nice loft apartments I think if you like downtown kid of city living - but I don't know how well that would work with a 5 year old.
  • Thank you all SOOOOO much! We are moving from Massachusetts so we're definitely looking forward to the "niceness" we've been told so much about. (Haha they refer to us as MassHoles.)

We were actually looking at Indian Ridge and more recently, the Candlelight Commons. Has anyone heard of them? They seem nice and fairly priced, but I don't know.

Really, this means so much to me! I feel like I've googled every apartment complex known to man. Haha. You guys are awesome!
  • Candlelight Commons apartments are not in the nicest place.  I do know a few peolple that live at Indian Ridge and really like it.  We were thinking of moving and were looking at Indian Ridge.  They seem like the best deal and location.  Make sure to ask where the apartment is that you will be getting because some are near a very busy road.  Hope that helps a little more.

  • Thank you so much! I'm bummed about Candlelight Commons. Haha the name sounded nice and I loved the idea of a townhome vs a one-level. I currently work for a chiropractor and she recommended Indian Ridge. :)
  • If you don't mind a short commute (8ish miles), you could look into some of the bedroom communities of Davenport as well.  We live in Eldridge, and it takes 15 minutes to get to Palmer.  Long Grove and Park View are GREAT communities as well.  Eldridge is about 3000 people and is a nice, clean, safe little town.  It may be a little more affordable as well.  We live in a 2 BR, which is a little small with our 3 month old, but we make due and the rent is not bad.  The apt above us is actually for rent right now. :)
