Wisconsin Vacation Ideas?

Hi there WI nesties! My husband, daughter who is 15 months and I will be traveling to visit DH's family in June. We'll be in Milwaukee, and then need to make our way to Madison for a wedding. We have 3 days to play with, and I"m looking for suggestions on something nice, relaxing and family friendly.

I've seen some "farm vacation" ideas which sound neat and relaxing, and then there are the dells (we have never been). I guess I want something not too crazy as this will be our only vacation/downtime this year.

Anyhow, I'm pretty open to anything and everything that is centrally located to these two areas.

Any suggestions for this Austin nestie? Thanks so much for your help!

Re: Wisconsin Vacation Ideas?

  • While in Milwaukee, check out the zoo - its one of the best in the Midwest.  There is alot to do there, so you can easily spend a FULL day there.  If its a rainy day (or you want to take a break from the sun, check out the Museum, its one of my favorites).

You can also do a day trip in the Dells (and not even have to visit any water parks).  You can ride the Ducks, see a water show, etc.  The minute you arrive to the Dells, stop at a Vistor booth (or even a restaurant) and look through the flyers - once again its a day trip in itself.

Hope I gave you some ideas!!

  • You have a lot of options. You could easily plan your trip around Milwaukee, Madison, or the Dells! The Dells can be crazy but it depends which activities you pick and where you stay.

Maybe Madison would be nice? Devil's Lake State Park near Madison is very cool. There's a huge summer farmer's market in Madison on Saturdays, but that might interfere w/ the wedding. The free Henry Vilas Zoo would be good for kids. It was decent last time I was there (years ago). Also Circus World Museum in Baraboo. You could also walk around the U of Wisconsin campus, see the capitol building, or relax at the lakes. I'm not a UW grad so I bet others out there have more info for you.

  • Milwaukee area: There is Betty Brinn's Children's museum in Milwaukee, I haven't been there in years, but think they have stuff for younger kids too.  I would suggest a Sprecher's or Miller Brewery tour, but maybe with the little one you might want to skip that (although Sprecher's has the best root beer!). If it's late June, Summerfest might be going on if you like an excellent music festival (don't bring the little one at night though). If you're a baseball fan don't miss the Brewers at Miller Park!

Madison area - I second the Henry Villas zoo, it's free!  It's always fun just walking around State Street, having some Babcock ice cream at the Union.  There is also a small children's museum by the Capitol (again not sure what ages are appropriate though), and touring the Capitol itself isn't a bad gig, but I'm kind of a history dork.

Wisconsin Dells - it's about a 45 drive from Madison, so not too far.  If it's a nice day The Ducks are a nice way to see the actual beauty of the Dells, not just the commercialism.  If you do plan to stay there, weeknight rates will be easier on the wallet.  The Circus World museum in Baraboo is probably only a fifteen minute drive from the Dells.

Other ideas? If you're football fans, you could always drive up to Green Bay (about 1 1/2 hrs from Milwaukee) and go to Lambeau Field and see the Packers hall of fame.  If you're into history, you can tour a WWII submarine in Manitowoc.  If you go there, be sure to go to Kohler, it's a quaint little town and you can visit their design center.  This sounds weird, but it is pretty neat to see the different products Kohler offers(showers, sinks, etc.), and they have a little museum describing the history of the town.

    Good luck!

  • For nature go to Baraboo- DH and I loved it up there- I believe the clown hall of fame is up there- so is Devil's lake.
  • I second Betty Brinn Museum - it's right by the lakefront, so when you're done if your DD is doing ok, you can go to the waterfront and fly kites, walk around, rent paddleboats, etc.

The zoo is also a great suggestion, but IMHO (and I've gone to quite a few) a zoo is a zoo is a zoo...I think the MCZ is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but if you want something really "vacation-like"...not sure that's it, you know? (We do go to the zoo a lot with our little one as well, so that might be why I'm saying that!)

I love going to the breweries...but again, with a little one, probably not the best option. ;o)  Anytime in the summer you'll find festivals at the Maier Festival Grounds (Summerfest, cultural fests, etc). If you google the fairgrounds, you shoudl be able to find a listing of all the different festivals.

     HTH!
