Hi Ladies,
I had my DD at 34 weeks (as a big surprise to us, I had a very uncomplicated pregnancy up until then). I delivered at West Allis and had a great experience with the NICU and also was quite impressed with the lactation consultants as well. We were living very close to West Allis at the time, but have since moved to Ozaukee county. I am very upset with my ob-gyn (another LONG story), so I am thinking of choosing the hospital I want to deliver at next time, and choosing my ob-gyn based on the hospital I choose. There are no NICUs in Ozaukee County, and it is very important to me that I deliver at a hospital with a NICU. My husband's insurance will cover Froedert/Children's, St. Mary's, or WAMH. Has anyone had experiences with the NICUs at any of these hospitals? Are they all level 3 NICUs? What about your experiences with the lactation consultants? Nursing staff for you? Any other thoughts?
Also...disclaimer: I am not pregnant again...I just am obsessed with NICUs!
Thanks!
Re: NICUs in Milwaukee
I will be giving birth at the Columbia Center at Columbia/St. Mary's in Ozaukee. Their NICU is only level 2....if baby needs more, then they are send to St. Mary's downtown. I don't know much yet! But the birthing suites are new and very nice. My OB is at the hospital as well and I really like their office. The docs do the U/S and exams themselves....not techs or nurses. And the atmosphere is very laid back and casual.
I have been very impressed with everything I have experienced so far.
They are planning on building another Hospital in Grafton...Aurora I think.
Sorry I can't help you more yet!
I have not had personal experience with any of them except WAMH and i was not happy with them. The Doc in the NICU didn't even talk to me for 2 days to tell me what was going on. On the day i took him home I sat in the NICU for 7 hours waiting for the doc. No one told him I was waiting and that I wanted to take my son home. That is just the start. I was not a fan of my particular lactation consultant. She just got me so worked up that I couldn't relax. I almost gave up because of her. I am sure everyone has different experiences.
I have a friend that had an uncomplicated delivery at Froedert and didn't like the care there, but if there is a problem you can not get any better then Children's.
For my next one (if I have another) I will try and deliver at St Joe's. The rooms are not as modern, but the staff, experience and equipment is the best. I have a friend that has had to emergency C's there and loves it.
T1andT2-
I didn't realize there is a NICU at all at the St. Mary's in Ozaukee, when it first opened I tried finding out about it on the website but was unsuccessful. Maybe since they have updated the website. I am going to check it out. Anyways, good luck and keep me posted!
I delivered at a hospital in Washington County that has a level 2 nursery. I think it means that they can do the basics, but if its a serious case, they go to Childrens.
My DD was on oxygen and anitbiotics for 1 week. We were very happy with the care we received there.

I will be delivering at Columbia/St. Marys. I am having twins and I am considered high risk so I also need NICU. I have had friends deliver there and they like it.
My sister's baby was just in the NICU at Froedtert/Childrens. If your insurance covers it I highly suggest going there. They have been wonderful.
The website for the birthing center portion of the hospital is:

I have a good friend that works in the NICU @ Childrens....as far as I've heard, thats the best there is..
GL!
