Any Gardeners?

When and what do you plan on planting this year?  With the weather we've had I just don't know!  Have you started anything in the house yet?

Re: Any Gardeners?

  • We're doing a salsa garden..

    tomatoes, onions, celantro,and peppers.

  • I hope to plant:
    tomatoes (3 kinds)
    peppers (green, red, jalapeno, banana...etc)
    cucumber
    zucchini
    yellow squash
    and herbs

So far I have brought some of my warmer zone bulbs up from the basement and into the sun.  Callas and agapanthus are starting....I'm not sure the cannas and begonia made it.

I will start some herbs inside soon....and the toms and peppers in the beginning of April....then plant outside around Memorial Day...or rather maybe my Mom will plant them...since that is when baby is suppose to come!

Zukes and yellow squash I usually just plant right outside....or start inside, but not until May.

  • I am new to the northern growing season and plants that grow well up here, so can someone recommend a good website or book?  I will just be doing containers of flowers and maybe some vegetables, since we live in a townhouse.  Thanks!
  • We have planted a vegetable garden the last two years, but it was too big and I couldn't keep up with all of the weeding.  Last year we tried growing cauliflower, chives, and cantalope and they didn't take off at all (I read cauliflower is really hard for novice gardeners like us to grow).  We had really good luck with peas, green beans, tomatoes, kolarobi, and cucumbers.  The 1st year we had a garden we had really good success with acorn squash.  Last year they didn't grow at all!  We plan on doing the same stuff again this year, but at a much smaller scale.  I love gardening though :)
  • We're planting a LOT this year.  Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, jalapenos, broccoli, eggplant, butternut squash, zukes, spinach, onions (red and white).... and more.  I have a whole list at home.  That's not including relocating and expanding the herb garden....

When... probably Memorial Day. We planted the week before it last year but it was much warmer at this time of year then. :P

Someone asked for a book recommendation - I'd pick up "Month-by-Month Gardening in Wisconsin" by Melinda Myers.  Very handy.
