Hi ladies,
I posted awhile back about Duke. He was originally adpoted and returned a WEEK later for being too needy and counter surfing food. I was frantically trying to find a rescue/foster home for him and they called me to tell me that he was going to be PTS.
He is with me in an Indianapolis suburb. He currently resides in my garage in a kennel due to my UBER alpha male and my foster that has "doxitude."
I have one rescue in Marion, WI that is willing to take him on, but they don't have space for him right now. I also have two more leads on rescues in Madison (WI) and one in NY.
Duke is a very laid back hound. Right now he is about 55 lbs, but he should be around 70-75lbs. He was neutered yesterday and is parasite/worm free. He is UTD on vaccines.
He is a cuddle bug and wants to be around people. He does mark EVERYTHING right now (outside and INSIDE), but it should subside with the neutering and I have a belly band for him to curb it (neuter too sensitive right now).
I don't know how he is with cats (hounds gen. have a high prey drive), but he is ok with the mini doxie I have. I don't know how he is with children, but he has a very laid back attitude (especially with my neurotic pack) and I think he would be ok, but we haven't tested yet.
I can schedule a transport to get him to you and from you to the rescue.
If you can foster, or know of anyone that can, please email me -- bartonhounds AT gmail.com
TIA!!!! Elisabeth
Move along, nothing to see here.....
Re: Duke needs a foster!!!
Sorry about that - counter surfing food means that he will jump up on the counter and pull human food down for himself. He doesn't spend any time in my house due to my UBER alpha male and the foster male with doxitude.
He is severely underweight and was picked up as a stray, which is why I am not surprised he counter surfed. The poor guy is out in my garage in a kennel for all hours and doesn't get as much intereaction with us as he should.
My smaller female counter surfs (she will jump directly on to a counter height table). I correct her by saying BAH/EH EH when I catch /hear her, shake a can of pennies, etc. This can also be corrected while he is leashed to you too because you would be more aware of when he is doing it.
Personally I think the bigger issue is his marking. It will subside as the testosterone (sp?) gets out of his system, but he will need to be trained (I bought a belly band to help with that).
The Marion, WI rescue has told me that they will have space in a month. I need to get an update check on that. The Twigs Project hasn't outlined a time for him yet because I just started talking to him. The faster we can get him on Petfinder and get the word out about him, hopefully he will get a fast home (he's such a cuddlebug!).
Elisabeth- enlighten me...whats a belly band???
M - its a piece of cloth that has an absorbancy piece of flannel in it that you wrap around their middle. When they decide to mark something, it stays on the absorbancy square. It's also used for incontince (sp?) in dogs.
I actually bought the "special" pads to go with it, and they are just maxipads! You can use the pads, or just toss the wrap in the wash.
