visiting portland at end of month

and would like to sample some of your many local breweries!  I'm going to be depending on transit most of the time that I"m there, and I see that there is plenty of service to portland city center.  I'm assuming it's safe, but anywhere I should avoid? (I'm from Philadelphia, so I'm very comfy in urban areas)

Some of the places I'm interested in are:
Please let me know which ones are a must-see!  Thanks!!!

Re: visiting portland at end of month

  • Personally I would visit Ankeny, Williams, Alberta and NE Fremont streets only in daylight hours.  Those areas are scary to me, but I'm a suburban kinda chick :-(  Not that would avoid them altogether....but I'd feel safer in some of the other areas you've listed.
  • You don't need to hit up more than one McMenamins. I'd choose Kennedy School vs. the other. You'll get the true McMenamins vibe there.

Don't worry about safety. All of the above are in perfectly legit parts of town.

  • I would have to agree that one McMenamins is enough and that the Kennedy is the better. One Lucky Lab and one Lompoc would prevent repeats. Two others that are good is the Horse Brass & the Rogue (sorry don't have addresses for those, I know that that Horse Brass is on the East side and the Rogue is at 14th & Flanders).
  • Ditto the others on McM's although I tend to like Blue Moon on 23rd over Kennedy School. Probably location based. Skip Rock Bottom. It's a chain based out of Colorado and it's got crappy beer and I don't know if it still is but, it used to be a skanky meat market. You missed Portland Brewing, Bridgeport and a slew of others.
  • I agree with others that one New Old Lompoc and one Lucky Lab and one McMenamins would be enough. I suggest Kennedy School as that is such a cool place to visit. You can catch a movie there too for $3 or just hang out in one of their funky little bars. For New Old Lompoc I'd go with the 5th Quadrant because I like how it looks inside and it's right next door to Pix Patisserie where you can get lovely desserts and a large selection of Belgian bottled beer (or if you want to go in SE you can go to the Hedge House, also owned by New Old Lompoc, and there is a Pix close by there as well).

There is also a new brewery that opened on SE Powell that I haven't been to yet called Hopworks. You might want to check that out.

You're making me jealous, I love all this microbrew beer we have to offer here, but can't have any right now. Only 9 more weeks until I'm due though, so I think I can splurge on the occasional beer after that ;).
  • I second Horse Brass... it's a really cool pub (not really a brewery though.)  Only issue I have with it is the smokiness.  Just don't wear dry clean only stuff.  :o)

The address is 4534 SE Belmont, Portland.
  • Man, you're making me want beer! I wouldn't worry about any of the locations. Portland is a pretty tame/safe town, just keep your wits about you.

You could also stop by Bridgeport on NW Marshall. Henry's on Burnside (and NW 10th-ish) also has a good selection of local beers on tap. Good happy hour too! You can also go on tours at the Hair of the Dog Brewery in SE Portland.

It's too bad you won't be here at the end of July when we have the Oregon Brewers fest! Have a good trip.
