Eugene?

Hello everyone,
I'm hoping that I can get some Eugene insight. Dh and I love living the "OC lifestyle" and although we can afford buying a home, the added HOA's and Mello roos will kill us if we buy here. So we have heard some many great things of OR. Specially Bend and Eugene. We are considering moving and starting our family out there. It seems like there is so much nature!!!
Can you give me the pros and cons of what you think of Eugene or simply living in OR.

TIA!

Re: Eugene?

  • Although I can't speak for Eugene....here's my opinion of Oregon in General.

Bend area GREW fast and became really spendy.  I know you can find jobs there, but I don't know about the quantity of GOOD paying jobs.  I honestly don't know how people afford to live there, but then again I haven't contemplated moving there.  My gf lived there for 10 years and will probably be moving back.  She thinks the metro area has become to busy for her.

I love the metro area, there are a lot of job opportunities (unless I live in a cave)  in my circle of friends none of us have had issues finding work and we all do a variety of jobs.

Oregon is beautiful...we have the mountains a couple hours east and the ocean a couple hours west...what more do you need?

Sure we get rain a lot of the year, but it comes with trade offs...only a handful of days at 100 degrees in the summer very low humidity and all that rain brings us the green, lush areas we have here!

  • IMO, the OC lifestyle is very different than what you'll find in Eugene, or even Portland, so if you love the OC lifestyle you might want to spend some time in Eugene before moving. Ideally, try the fall/winter to see what the nastier weather is like b/c some people have trouble adjusting. A friend of mine from your area tried to move here last year and she only lasted about 4 months before needing to move back to a sunnier location :)
I've never lived in Eugene, I've just spent a lot of time there (I grew up in the Portland area), and I worked/lived near/in OC for about 8 yrs. I think you'll find Eugene is more casual, liberal, and has an anything goes attitude. It is also greener, both in a literal and environmental sense. Of course the weather will be a lot different (lots of gray days, a decent amount of rain, and moderate temperatures). The beaches aren't that far (maybe 90 minutes?) but they have a different appeal than the OC beaches. Eugene is a university city, so it has youthful, college areas.
Hopefully some other people will be able to give you more details.

  • The OC and Eugene = Opposite ends of the spectrum. If you like the OC, I can't fathom you liking Eugene. Bend would be borderline. Definitely find a job before you move. Far too many people move up here from CA for the "cheap" COL only to find that jobs aren't as plentiful and salaries aren't as generous (low supply, high demand means lower salaries).
