Another "thinking of moving to Oregon" post

Hello everyone!  DH and I are considering moving to Oregon in the next few years (sooner, rather than later!)  He wants to go to the University of Oregon for Architecture.  My best friend currently lives in Salem.  We've been up there a few times and love it.

So, flood me with your information!  Housing, entertainment, commutes, jobs, anything.  We have a cat and a large dog (55 lbs), and a couple small pets. Where I live now it's been extremely hard to find pet-friendly housing for the dog.  From what I've checked online, the apartment prices seem to be similar to where we're living now (Utah).

I also own horses, so if any of you have information about board/training/jobs that would be cool.  TIA!

  • do you want to rent or own??

  • Renting is what I'm looking at for the moment.  We won't have much saved as far as a down-payment goes by the time we move.
  • Should we assume because your DH wants to go to UofO that you'll want to live in Eugene? Or because you mention Salem and commuting, you'd consider living there or anywhere in between? (I wouldn't -- that's a pretty long haul. Corvallis is about 45 min. North of Eugene and Salem is even further than that).
  • We would like to live in Eugene, or around that area.  A 45 minute commute is about as long as we're willing to go, but the closer, the better.
  • FYI- part of the U of O Architecture program is moving to downtown Portland.  I don't know details, but I was interviewing an Architecture major at U of O the other day who told me that at least part of the department was moving into the White Stag building in downtown Portland and she was having to relocate to the city.

  • i have never lived down there, so i honestly don't have anything helpful to say. But i hope you find something you love! i hear its a fun place. My SIL and BILand his wife all graduated from there.

  • I grew up and went to college in Corvallis so I can't help much with Eugene. I do remember hearing that the Greek system in Eugene was growing for the simple fact that there was a housing shortage but I don't know if that's still the case. If it is, I'd start looking for housing as soon as possible.
  • I live in Corvallis and used to work in Eugene for the 4-H program, there are lots of stables in that area, especially right outside Eugene in Junction City or Springfield.  It's very pretty and a great place to live down there.  We are undergoing some major county services reductions right now so that is one thing to consider.  Housing is very expensive here (less than California and way more than the mid-west).
