Re: thinking of moving to oregon...need help!

  • I wouldn't think prospects in publishing would be all that great here. Unemployment Rankings: 41 OREGON 5.6 42 KENTUCKY 5.7 43 NEVADA 5.8 44 ARKANSAS 5.9 45 OHIO 6.0 46 CALIFORNIA 6.1 46 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 6.1 48 ALASKA 6.5 49 SOUTH CAROLINA 6.6 50 MISSISSIPPI 6.8 51 MICHIGAN Although Oregon's unemployment has improved as of late, it's important to know that a good deal of jobs here are retail or restaurant based (min. wage type jobs). Oregon has only 1 Fortune 500 company headquartered here, Nike. The problem with that is that higher-salaried jobs typically are located where headquarters are. In addition, many of the industries Oregon has are very dependent upon the economy (which isn't looking good right now) -- things like creative, advertising, etc. Those are typically the first things that are cut when the economy goes south which means high unemployment in the future. On the good side of things, you should be able to find a house. Since the housing market has gone south, the number of homes available and decreasing in price have really increased.
  • There really isn't much here in the way of publishing jobs.  There are only very small presses around here, and an over-abundance of people who would love to have those jobs.

  • The job market in Oregon is not very good right now.  He might be able to find something but it's hard.  The other thing is housing is still very expensive in this area.
