Pls help...if you've ever gotten a speeding ticket in OR

I got a ticket the other week in Milwaukie in a huge speed trap on my way to my OB of all places.  I honestly don't believe I was speeding.  It was in a construction zone and I even looked down to make sure I wasn't.  But regardless I got the ticket and will be going to my court date.  I have only lived in OR for 2 1/2 yrs so I am no familiar with the process at all.  I keep hearing from people that insurance companies don't check OR driving records.  I find this hard to believe.  But this is my main concern for the cop says I was going 11 over in construction zone so he marked it as 3 points for my record.  That will kill our insurance.  I have never gotten a ticket before, in fact when he handed me the ticket he said "too bad, looks like you were a good driver".
Does Oregon offer traffic school?  And if so do you know what the "qualifications" are for it?  And help or info is appreciated.  TIA

  • DH got a ticket last year, and it didn't affect our insurance cost.  He was totally at fault for speeding, and they still refunded most of his money when he paid his ticket.  That's all I know though - good luck.

  • I don't think you've been given accurate information about ins. companies and driving records.  Granted it was about 10 years ago, but my insurance company DID find out about the speeding ticket I got by checking my OR driving record.  Thankfully its been long enough that its off my record now.  I don't know anything about traffic school & all that though.
  • Milwaukie is a speed trap, that's why we have such nicely paved roads!!

You might be eligible for the "first offenders program" you have to go take some class and then if you don't get another ticket in a year (I think...) then the ticket gets taken off your record.

I got a speeding ticket in Milwaukie last summer on my lunch break on my way home, and I went to court for it, and the judge reduced it by 2/3.  The ticket was originally almost $300 and I paid $95 for it.  So I would say it's definitely worth it to take an afternoon off work and go to the court date, if possible.

  • Insurance companies DO check your record here, just as they do in other states. It's up to your insurance company how often and whether they will raise your rates after one infraction. I've never heard of traffic school here and I've lived here all my driving life (and before). I believe there is a diversion program for DUIIs but I could be wrong about that since I've never had one. You can go to court to fight it. I've heard that a lot of times cops don't show up for court dates and if they don't, you're free. Don't quote me on that though -- I've never tried it. Just something I've heard more than once.
  • it depends on the court.  Plead not guilty and have a trial.  If it was a speed trap that info will come out at the trial.
