Fave local charities?

So Oregon decided to give us back 500 bucks, even though we?ve only been here 3 months. That?s cool with me, just a little surprised. Aren?t you guys supposed to be famous for your high taxes?  J

Anyway, I?d like to give it back and help less fortunate Oregonians in our community. We actually don?t mind paying taxes, as long as we get nice roads and know the $ is helping the community. (You guys should see the roads in PA.)

?My? causes are homelessness and animals. I think I can ?buy? about 6 spay/neuters with that at the humane society. Any other suggestions?

Re: Fave local charities?

  • I'm a fan of Planned Parenthood (no surprise since I'm on the board). A couple of other organizations that we support that might appeal to you (homelessness): - Goose Hollow Family Shelter (they help transition homeless families to temporary housing to help them get back on their feet) - Neighborhood House (a plethora of services including a food bank, energy assistance so people have heat if they can't afford it, SUN schools, programs for the elderly and more) DH's dad supports (among others): - Depaul Treatment Ctr (they help all sorts of people with addiction -- including the homeless) - Outside Inn (help homeless with medical care and a plethora of other services including helping them get off the street if they want to) Those are just some off the top of my head. I'm sure I'll think of more but it's 6am and my brain hasn't started working yet. I can also give you information on a bunch of other orgs we support but they aren't directly tied to homelessness or animals. One, I used to give to, is Alternatives For Prostitution but I stopped giving because I didn't feel secure they were organized enough to put the money to best use. Oh, and we don't give to this one but Dove Lewis Animal Hospital is WONDERFUL. There's also a cat coalition (I don't know the exact name of it) that helps with spay and neutering of feral cats.
  • Dove Lewis (www.dovelewis.org) is an emergency animal hospital that also supports a lot of animal 'causes' in the area.  That is wonderful of you to want to give back :)
  • I would suggest you take a look at Outside In. It is an amazing organization that works with homeless teens. They actually have 2 doggis day cares that the youth staff and it teaches them job skills and helps develop many skills. They also offer alternative care in their clinic so teens addicted to drugs and working hard to become clean, don't have to take prescription drugs if they are sick, rather they can do acupuncture, herbs or the like.
  • Oh oh oh!  I hope I'm not too late to chime in.  I know you said your thing is animals and homelessness (which are great great things to be interested in) but I volunteer with the African Women's Coalition and I'm sure they would love some love.  :)

It's a small organization that helps African refugees in the Portland area.  Right now I'm tutoring an 11 year old Somali girl in English.  If you decide to help out a different charity, I KNOW they can always use volunteers.  :)

Regardless, I think it's awesome that you're doing this.

Oh and the website is www.awc-portland.org if you're interested.  Hope that helps!
  • My Father's House in Gresham, OR provides a place for clean and sober homeless families and helps them get back on their feet. I've donated to them before.
