If you had a day to spend in Charlottesville...

what would you do?  DH and I are heading down skyline drive and then staying with friends in Charlottesville for the night...we then have all day Thursday with no real agenda except to make our way down to Roanoke by the evening...so any suggestions as how to kill a day?

We like being outdoorsy and touristy. Thanks!

  • I'm a real sucker for Monticello, but I'm a history teacher so that may not be what you're looking for. We also have some fantastic vineyards as well!

  • The downtown mall if you like unique shops/walking around/food.

I went to UVA so of course I love the "grounds" (the University campus)....it is really so pretty especially in the spring. The Rotunda is beautiful and there is nothing like walking on The Lawn on a nice day.  "The Corner" is a strip of bars/shops by the University.  It is a college town so if you've never been to UVA, I would highly recommend it.

If you like wine there are many, many great vineyards in the area.

C-ville is known for a ton of great restraunts as well if you want to eat out.

I'm actually heading there tomorrow for the day :)

  • Tour of UVa or just walk around in the morning, downtown mall for an outdoor lunch- Marco and Luka's (sp?) has the most wonderfully fantastic asian dumplings..... mmmmmmmm....

    Then wine tasting all afternoon!

I love Cville! (that's why we're moving back!)

  • I would definatly say if it is nice go walk around the UVA campus, along the Lawn and Rotunda. Then head to the walking mall for some lunch, they are redoing the side walk there, but it is still fun to look at the shops and there tons of restraunts.  Then hit up some wineries on your way home. Some favs of mine are First colony, Keswick, and Horton. but check out virginiawine.org  for a list of winereis in the area.

Enjoy!!! Charlottesville is a great town, hence why we moved here last summer.

  • I think it's definitely necessary that you go on a tour on Monticello. They do an amazing job at really getting in great history and facts on TJ. While you're up on that mountain, you can go to Ash Lawn, but it doesn't have that same wow factor as Monticello. I lived in Cville my whole life until recently, and I make it a point to tour there once a year.

The downtown mall is great to eat and people watch, and UVA grounds are really beautiful, but will be crowded with students. But it is still amazing to compare the Lawn and the Rotunda with Monticello (both designed by Jefferson).

    Enjoy!
