The suburbs

So my DH and I are looking to purchase our first home, but don't know where.  We like where we live now, but the prices are kinda ridiculous for what we want in a house.  We are looking at moving to Roselle, Bloomingdale, Elk Grove Village...does anyone have any opinion on them one way or another?

Re: The suburbs

  • I lived in Elk Grove last year before I moved in with Mike, and I really like Elk Grove, its small, very quiet, but close enough to woodfield and everything.  I like Elk Grove over Roselle and Bloomingdale.
  • I've lived in Bloomingdale and Elk Grove, went to high school in Roselle / Medinah and know people who live in both. I like Bloomingdale and Elk Grove. B'dale is a bit "Mayberryish" at times, if you like that kind of thing.

Elk Grove seems more anonymous, but it's closer to everything. I did hear O'Hare air traffic often from my apartment.

  • I never really hear airport traffic, I lived off of nerge and martingale.  But I hear airport traffic ALL the time now where I live in Mt. Prospect.....it sucks!
  • (My apt in Elk Grove was near the high school.)

  • Ok, then you are closer where I am at...makes sense!

  • My parents live in Roselle and love it, but they do not have a very good school district. I work in Elk Grove and it has a lot of industrial areas. I live in Schaumburg, we have the largest school district (HS) in Illinois and our schools are the top rated in the state as well. We also have an amazzing park district. If you plan on staying for a while you should def look into the schools before you buy. We bought in Schaumburg because of the school district and the nieghborhood (we LOVE ours!).

  • I grew up in Bloomingdale and it was a great town and I also lived in Roselle for a while and I really liked it there.  I still have family that live in both towns.  I think the school dist. in Blooomingdale is a little bit better than Roselle for grade school but the two towns do end up going to the same high school.
  • There are different areas in all the burbs you listed that are really nice.  I teach in Roselle and live in Schaumburg.  I agree with pp about looking at the schools if you are planning on staying there for a while.  Even if you're not, schools definitely come into play with resale.  Like pp said, the school district I work at, 54, is fabulous.  You really should just look for your price range in all those suburbs and see what you find.  GL!
  • I have a lot of friends out that way.  In my experience, a lot of them rent or buy their first places in Roselle, but then move to Bloomingdale, Elk Grove, Medinah, or even Elgin after that.

Bloomingdale and Medinah can be a little Mayberry, but I think that they're great areas.
