Anyone live Down town??

To move or not to move?
DGH and I have been in the burbs for about 3 years and are looking for job change.  We would love to pack up and be able to buy a 1 bedroom loft downtown.  Fulton River district, River North, Bucktown?  Anyone live in a fun young area.
My husband is really down on his job and completely looking for a job with what his degree is in.  I think it would be better to move downtown for this oppurtunity.
Thoughts??

Re: Anyone live Down town??

  • I've lived in our condo in River North for years and we love it! I even used to commute 2 hours out to Schaumburg because we couldn't bear to move out of the city. I work in Evanston now and the commute is WAY better. One thing about living downtown is that you can work anywhere in and out of the city, since it's centrally located. I love the nightlife, restaurants, stores, and all the fun things the city has to offer. I see friends on a regular basis, and we have a dog so we've met many of our neighbors just by walking her. You will have to put up with traffic, no parking, and noise(especially with upstairs neighbors), but it's a trade off. What kind of work is your DH looking for? DH is a consultant and always has his eyes open for potential hires. Take care!
  • Both DH and I live and work in the downtown area.  Overall we love it.  The draw backs are the reduced parking and city noises.  While we live in a quieter area we still get sirens and car alarms during the night.

I am now just getting out and about more and enjoying the area.  The walking and the train rides are an adjustment since I was always used to driving.

  • i lived in river north and LOVED it....if we could afford it we would have bought there....we're in the west loop now near the fulton district...it's great...very close to the loop...the only thing i don't like it that we're not super close to any el stops....but that's the only drawback.
  • we live in South Loop.   and LOVE it.    my commute is 20 minutes, max.  and dh's is either 5 minutes, or 20 minutes if he decides to walk.    that's really nice.   not to mention being close to more restaurants than i know what to do with and having the park and lakefront at our doorstep.

the downside is definitely the noise, and, for us, the lack of trees/nature.  Sure, the park is there, but its not the same as having the shade of trees, tree-lined streets, small lawns, etc.   we're currently looking to move into Gold Coast to get a little more quiet and a little more nature.
